If Shiner's road game at Ganado on October 29 provided the Comanches a chance to see how to defend a spread attack, their 46-2 win on Friday ( November 5, 2021 ) in the final regular-season game against Schulenburg showed Shiner how to deal with physical and hard-tackling defense.

Dalton Brooks ran for 182 yards and two touchdowns while Doug Brooks finished with 89 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Comanche ground attack.

While Shiner did bust out some big runs, it also had plenty of short or modest gains as the Shorthorns tackled hard. "Schulenburg has some size and speed on defense, and made us earn everything," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "They showed multiple looks and were physical with us. It was good for our offense to see that."

Shiner's defense held the 'Horns to just 78 yards and kept their offense out of the end zone; Schulenburg did score two points after blocking a Comanche PAT and running it back to the opposite end zone.

"We did well on defense and attacked. Schulenburg has done things that have hurt certain teams. We did well adjusting," he said. Shiner had 104 yards through the air and two scores as Drew Wenske went 3-for-4 for 76 yards and touchdown passes to Dalton Brooks, Tyler Bishop and Eli Fric.

Schulenburg took the opening kickoff but Shiner got the ball fairly quickly as Drew Wenske picked off quarterback Tyler Ryba to set up Shiner at the Shorthorns 21 and Doug Brooks scored on the first play from scrimmage to help give Shiner a 7-0 lead.

Schulenburg went three plays and out on the next drive, and the Comanches scored on a 78-yard run by Dalton Brooks to go up 13-0 after missing the extra point.

The Comanches next drive began at its 36 and drove the 64 yards in nine plays as the Shorthorns limited Shiner on some plays to no more than seven or eight yards. Late in the drive, Doug Brooks had a 16-yard gain and Dalton Brooks had a 10-yard gain. Doug Brooks finished the drive with a 4-yard run with 3:29 leff in the first for a 20-0 lead.

Shiner's next drive went 56 yards in 12 plays, ending on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Wenske to Tyler Bishop for the 26-0 lead with 7:14 left in the first half. Bryce Filip got Shiner's second interception on the next drive for the Horns to give Shiner the ball at Schulenburg 35 and Dalton Brooks scored on a 23-yard run.

The point after was blocked and Schulenburg's Kelsean Johnson returned the ball for 2 points for Schulenburg, their lone score of the game.

Shiner scored at the end of the half - key play was a 25-yard pass from Dalton Brooks, who lined up at quarterback, to Eli Fric from the Shiner 47 to the Horn 25. Wenske then hit Dalton Brooks for a 25-yard touchdown pass and the 39-2 lead.

Shiner scored on the first drive of the third quarter as the game went to a running clock. Wenske threw his third touchdown pass on a 42- yard to Fric.

Shiner's second-string offense and defense got in on the action for the rest of the half.

SHINER'S 3RD STRAIGHT UNDEFEATED REGULAR SEASON

The Comanches have now gone undefeated in the regular season every season Boedeker has been head coach (2019, 2020, 2021 regular seasons).

Boedeker was quick to credit the players. "It is a big accomplishment for these kids," he said. "Going undefeated in the regular season three years in a row does not happen often. They have something in front of them that is very special and they will always remember. It's one of the goals they had and they still have bigger goals."

The Comanches will begin the 2021 playoffs against the Harper Longhorns (see story this page) this evening ( November 11, 2021 ) at Davenport High School in San Antonio. Shiner beat Harper in the first round last year 72-12.
