SINTON — Being a freshman hasn't stopped Doug Brooks from making an impact for Shiner.

The Comanches knew what they were getting when Brooks came over from junior high.

"He has a great work ethic," said Shiner coach Steven Cerny. "He works hard and he deserves everything he's done. He's only going to get better each year."

Brooks admitted he was nervous before his first playoff game on Thursday ( November 15, 2018 ), but his jitters quickly vanished after Shiner's opening drive against Santa Maria.

Brooks ran 51 yards into the end zone to give the Comanches a lead they'd never relinquish in a 76-0 bi-district win over the Cougars at Pirate Stadium.

The Comanches (10-1) advanced to the Class 2A area round to play the winner of Friday's Brackettville-Hearne game.   SCS NOTE: Hearne defeated Brackett by the score of 49-6.

"It gave me a lot of confidence," said Brooks, who also had a blocked punt. “I know I can be a big help to this team."

Shiner began Thursday night ranked No. 4 in the Class 2A state poll and it showed in the first half against the Cougars.

The Comanches erupted for 64 points in the first half behind Brooks, Cole Patek, Donyai Taylor, Trevor Haynes, Tyler Mikes and Caleb Neal.

Patek finished with three touchdowns on two fumble recoveries and a 30-yard touchdown pass from Mikes.

“We played a really good game today,” Patek said. “Our minds were right and we came out hot. We didn’t let anyone down and overall, it was a great win. It felt good.”

Patek scored 12 points in a span of two minutes. His 31-yard touchdown run after the blocked punt came with a minute left in the first quarter.

A fumble by Santa Maria led to his 30-yard touchdown pass from Mikes to open the second quarter.

“It was a great experience and I loved it,” Patek said. “It was a great atmosphere.”

“I made the block for Cole because I wanted him to score a touchdown,” Brooks added. “I didn’t want to be selfish.”

Haynes also scored three touchdowns on runs of 2, 35 and 6 yards, while Taylor led Shiner's offense with 56 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Mikes finished with 57 passing yards and scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter. Caleb Neal scored on a 9-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

“We had a great week of practice,” Cerny said. “We knew last year we had an easy time against Santa Maria, but we didn’t take them for granted. We got after it all week long and I thought our kids really handled everything well tonight.”

The Comanche’s held the Cougars to only 17 yards in the first quarter.

“Our defensive line was solid,” Cerny said. “I thought we played really well across the board.”

Shiner will turn its attention to Thanksgiving break and its next opponent of the playoffs.

“Next week is going to be different with Thanksgiving, but the kids handle it really well,” Cerny said. “It’s going to get tougher each week.”
