SHINER – Shiner’s Kiley Michalec’s game winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning completed an undefeated District 28-2A season for the Lady Comanches. Shiner captured a 3-2 win over Weimar in thrilling fashion Friday night at Green-Dickson Park.

Following a steal of second, Michalec tagged on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Kailey Williams. The throw from the LadyCats right fielder sailed past third, allowing Michalec to score the winning run to give Shiner the district championship.

The game featured a pitching duel between Shiner starting pitcher Bethany Nevlud and Weimar's Dorrian Smith. Smith allowed three runs and struck out five in seven plus innings of work in the loss. Nevlud struck out four to secure the win.

“It was our last district home game against our biggest rival," Nevlud said. "I told the girls before that errors are part of the game, and we’re not perfect. I have one hundred percent trust in these girls."

Nevlud was able to pitch around four errors to secure the win for the Lady Comanches, who finished the regular season at 27-7-1 overall and 8-0 in district play.

“It was a great game," said Shiner coach Steven Cerny. "We had to make some big plays, and obviously we had a few errors. Overall, I was real proud that we were able to keep our composure and pull the win out of the end.”

Nevlud tripled to lead off the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a error.

Weimar (14-13, 6-2) struck back in the top of the fifth as Casey Menis drew the RBI walk to score Kerin Cernoch.

With the game tied 1-1, Shiner took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Michalec scored her first run of the evening on another error by the LadyCats.

“We’ve had to move people around and we’ve had a few injuries," said Weimar coach Roger Maupin. "We’ll learn from it, we’ll move on.”

Weimar tied it in the top of the seventh as Shiner committed three errors in the inning. The last error allowed Avery Elstner to score the tying run.

It was a memorable win for Shiner senior Sammi Kremling.

“It means everything to me being able to win a district championship with this team this year,” Kremling said.

Both the Lady Comanches and LadyCats begin their playoff journey next week.
