"He's my father and means everything to me," Brandon Cerny. "He taught me the game of football, but it's just tough to go out like this."
"You hate to lose it this way," said Steven Cerny. "Especially with me having a senior son, it's tough."
After the Comanches (8-4) missed a 24-yard field goal in overtime, the Punchers (10-2) scored on the next play when running back Haddon Hudson took a sweep to the left and scored on a 25-yard touchdown.
Hudson scored on runs of 43, 9, 64, and 25 with 282 yards on 29 carries for the Punchers.
"He's a tough runner and they were physical," Steven Cerny said.
The Punchers will advance to the regional round to play Normangee.
"I couldn't be more proud of them," Steven Cerny said. "At halftime, we were down 14-0, and I told them to come out in the second half and give me everything you got."
The Comanches came out in the second half and did just that.
After a interception by cornerback Ty Boedeker, Dadrian Taylor got Shiner on the scoreboard with a 31-yard touchdown run.
The Punchers answered right back with a 75-yard drive that ended with a 9-yard touchdown run by Klay Klaerner to put Mason up 21-6.
Brandon Cerny led three straight first downs that set up a 13-yard touchdown run by Taylor.
Taylor rushed for 183 yards on 31 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Comanches.
"We didn't want to give up at halftime," Brandon Cerny said. "Our attitude at halftime was to come out, fight and be stronger."
Hudson went straight through the Comanches' defense on a 64-yard touchdown run and the Punchers seemed to be on its way to a win going up 28-13 with 3:41 left in the game.
Brandon Cerny dropped back and hit wide receiver Boedeker for a 50-yard touchdown that cut the Punchers lead to eight points with 2:06 left in the game.
"We knew we had to hit something quick," Brandon Cerny said. "We had practiced that play all week in practice and it worked."
The Comanches kicked an onside kick and Boedeker came up with the ball.
With seven seconds left in regulation, Brandon Cerny connected with Boedeker for a 11- yard touchdown that tied the game at 28.
Brandon Cerny completed 3 of 8 passes for 72 yards and threw two touchdowns, while rushing for 50 yards on 14 carries.
Boedeker had three receptions for 72 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and one fumble recovery.
"Boedeker made a lot of good plays for us and Brandon was able to move the offense well in the second half," Steven Cerny said. "We just weren't able to come out on top this time."
