SHINER - Dadrian Taylor was making his first varsity start at running back, but it was hard to tell.
Taylor rushed for 176 yards and four touchdowns to lead Shiner to a 49-0 season-opening win over Industrial on Friday night at Comanche Stadium.
"It felt good," Taylor said. "I feel like I've got one of the best lines in 2A football right now. They work hard and we get results out of it."
Taylor scored on a 50-yard run on Shiner's first play from scrimmage. He added touchdown runs of 53 yards in the first quarter and 34 and 33 yards in the third quarter.
"I think junior high was the last time he started in the backfield," Shiner coach Steven Cerny said of Taylor, who started at wide receiver last season. "We've always worked him there in practice, so it's not like it's new to him."
Shiner quarterback Brandon Cerny was also making his first varsity start.
The junior completed 5 of his 9 passes for 98 yards, including touchdown passes of 22 and 33 yards to Justin Stovall.
"It's pretty much what I've been practicing for my freshman and sophomore year," Brandon Cerny said. "I finally got the chance. It's just like we've been practicing. This is the same team we've had kind of coming up with me."
Shiner, which is ranked No. 7 in Class 2A, rushed for 358 yards and averaged more than 10 yards per carry. Taylor had his yardage on six carries.
"Brandon and I have played together since seventh grade," Taylor said. "We kind of had it. We just didn't use the last few years. We kind of got back on pace this year."
The Comanches were just as dominant on defense, not allowing a first down until 6:30 was left in the third quarter.
The Cobras took only one snap in Shiner territory in the first half and finished with 140 total yards.
"I thought our guys up front did a great job," Steven Cerny said. "We got a good push on the D-line and our linebackers did a good job."
Industrial drove to the Shiner 18 in the fourth quarter before Alan Flores intercepted a pass to stop the drive.
"They definitely have some athletes," said Industrial coach Kensey Allen. "That Taylor kid is just phenomenal, and they do a good job doing what they do. You're always going to get that with Shiner."
Justin Stein came off the bench to carry five times for 88 yards and scored the Comanches' final touchdown on a 52-yard run in the third quarter.
"I thought our speed was the difference in the game," Steven Cerny said. "We looked really quick tonight. I thought we were in pretty good shape. That was one of my concerns with so many guys going both ways, but they really handled it pretty well."
