SHINER - The Shiner Comanches defeated the Class 3A Lexington Eagles by the score of 41-34 on Friday night at Comanche Stadium.
Light rain fell for most of the first half, but the Shiner offense managed to put up 28 points while holding the Eagles to just 14.
Shiner struck first on a 41-yard scamper by senior RB Tyler Patek. Blake Michalec's kick was good for the early 7-0 lead. Lexington took the ensuing drive downfield quickley and scored on a 4-yard run by QB Nic Dillon, followed by a successful extra point for a 7-7 tie. On their next drive, Shiner advanced down the field and scored on an 8-yard pass from Michalec to Patek. Michalec's kick was successful and the Comanches led 14-7 as the quarter ended.
After an unsuccessful possession by the Eagles, the Comanches scored again to go up 21-7. Lexington's next drive resulted in a TD by RB Berto Lara, but the kick failed. Late in the first half, Shiner drove down the field again and Chad Neubauer scored on a 1-yard run, followed by another Michalec kick. Shiner led 28-13 at the half.
Shiner received the opening kickoff of the second half, but fumbled deep in their own territory. Just a couple plays later, Lexington fumbled and DL Marcus Rodriguez picked it up and ran it in for the score. The extra point was good and Shiner took a 35-13 lead. Just before the end of the third, Lexington's Lara scored on a short run.
Shiner scored on their first possession of the fourth quarter on only two plays: a long run by Chad Neubauer and a 14-yard scamper by Tyler Patek to extend their lead to 41-20. Shiner's advantage lasted until just 4:03 remaining when Lexington scored again. The extra point was good, bringing the score to 41-27. On the very next play, Lexington successfully recovered an on-side kick and scored again with only 1:52 remaining to cut Shiner's lead to 41-34.
A second Eagle onside kick attempt was unsuccessful and Shiner ran out the remaining clock, including gaining a first down on 4th and one near midfield.
Shiner senior RB Tyler Patek led all rushers with 14 carries for 136 yards, and junior RB Chad Neubauer pitched in with 17 carries for 103 yards. Shiner amassed a total of 384 yards of offense, but yielded 399 total yards to Lexington's attack.
The Comanches will host 3A Rice Consolidated next Friday night for their homecoming game.
