Friday, he hopes for more success as the Comanches (8-3) will take on Flatonia (9-2) in the Class 1A, Division I regional round.
To play the Friday after Thanksgiving has become somewhat of a tradition for Cerny. Last season, the Comanches made it to the semifinal round, where they lost to Mart.
The Comanches played Flatonia when the two were district opponents in 2011.
"It's kind of a tradition," Cerny said about playing late into November. "We've had some deeps runs. Parents should expect that if your son plays for Shiner."
The Comanches escaped with a victory over No. 5 Mason 14-13 in the area round. They scored 14 points in the second half to propel themselves to their 14th straight regional round appearance.
"It was definitely a big confidence booster," Cerny said. "We finally pulled out one where we were not expected to win."
Jacob Stafford and Chad Neubauer each contributed a touchdown in last week's victory. Cerny hopes to have similar success against Flatonia - but not with just Stafford and Neubauer.
"We don't have any stud," Cerny said. "It's going to take a team to win."
