SAN ANTONIO - Shiner got an early indication of what was in store for Game 1 of its best-of-three Class 1A regional final game against Johnson City.

Joey Gamez was hit by a pitch and Wesley Patek walked to start the game, but a promising inning turned into the nightmare that was in store for the Comanches when Coy Boedeker lined a ball that third baseman Dylan Carter caught at his feet.

Carter proceeded to turn a second to first triple play, and the Eagles went on to a 9-3 win on Thursday night at the Blossom Athletic Center.

"That was big, right off the bat," said Shiner coach Daniel Boedeker. "We could have maybe got something going early and maybe relaxed these kids a little bit. It definitely shifted the momentum to their side right away."

Shiner dropped to 27-9 and will have to win Game 2 on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Blossom Center to force a decisive Game 3, which would be played Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Blossom Center.

The Comanches had only one hit against Johnson City (30-5) starter Laramie Blackwell and didn't play like a team two wins away from the state tournament.

Shiner had four passed balls, two errors and issued five walks. The Eagles added to the misery by getting nine hits and stealing five bases. Four of Johnson City's nine hits came with two strikes on the batter.

"We didn't get any breaks," Boedeker said. "They got clutch hits when they needed them and we left way too many people on base. One or two hits with those guys on base changes the ballgame a little bit."

Shiner took a 3-1 lead in the fourth, but left the bases loaded and did the same without scoring in the sixth.

Johnson City tied the game with a pair of leadoff walks by Sandelovic and a throwing error by catcher Cuatro Rankin in the bottom of the fourth.

The Eagles took control by scoring three times in each the fifth and sixth innings.

"We didn't do that tonight," Boedeker said of his team's ability to bounce back from mistakes. "That's something we've always done. Somebody's got to step up and say we're OK let's go and tonight I don't know if it was nerves or what but it just kind of got quiet tonight. You could just sense it."

The Comanches will have Joey Gamez on the mound as they attempt to keep their season alive.

"That's what we just talked about," Boedeker said. "Somebody's got to come up and get the big hit. We've done it throughout the year and we just didn't do it tonight. Tomorrow, we've got to come back and make sure we take advantage of those opportunities."
