As they do very regularly, Shiner accepted the challenge and rose to the occasion, beating Poth 41-19 to prevent a third-straight loss to the Pirates.
Quarterback Jarvis Williams and running back Caleb Cowan combined for 323 rushing yards and four touchdowns to pace the Comanche offense.
"I felt good but we have a few things to clean up. I had a few missed handoffs and fumbled snaps," Williams said. "The offensive line did great. All week, we anticipated the running backs having to run through arm tackles and they did that tonight."
It was an all-around good performance for both sides of the Shiner team.
"Our offense was working very hard," Cowan said. "The line did great. The running backs can't do it without them. I did not really think about the score margins but I knew if we played well, we could beat them. The defense came through for us tonight."
"I am super proud of the kids. We knew Poth was going to be a good challenge for us and our kids responded," Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "This group lives for these moments. They have a goal in mind and understand it is a long process; it's one week at a time and they took a step forward tonight, getting better."
Shiner ran a few more offensive plays than the Pirates, outgained them 517-320 and kept the potent Poth offense off the field.
"We were able to move the ball and the chains, and our offensive did a good job. (Offensive coordinator John) Peterson did a great job of calling the plays and the kids executed and that was the difference in the game," Boedeker said. "At halftime, Poth had only run 15 plays or so because we had the ball most of the time and we were able to finish off drives."
In the last two games, Poth averaged 26 points a game but Friday the Pirates scored just 19 points.
"We did really good defensively against a good offensive team. The quarterback is really good, good receivers. We had a couple of breakdowns but that happens when you play against good teams," Boedeker said. "We held our own and got some stops when we needed them. We got a couple of turnovers and were able to do something with them."
Shiner lead 14-7 after one frame and then proved to be difficult to slow down or stop afterwards, outscoring Poth 14-0 in the second quarter and 13-6 in the second half.
Shiner took the opening kickoff and the teams traded punts on the first two drives.
The Comanches second offensive series started at their own 28 and Cowan took an option pitch from Williams, went around the right side and raced 72 yards for a 7-0 Shiner lead at the 6:44 mark of the first quarter.
Shiner immediately got the ball back as Poth muffed the kickoff, giving Shiner the ball at the Pirate 36. After a short gain of 3 yards by Quincy Jones, Williams optioned to running back Clayton Fric for a 33-yard touchdown score and a 14-0 lead with 5:46 left in the first.
Poth got on the board on the next drive as the first place was a long pass of 37 yards from quarterback Major Luna to Jacob Clark, aided by a 15-yard roughing-the-passer call on Shiner, placing the ball at the Shiner 10. A few plays later, Luna hit Clark for an 8-yard touchdown catch to get Poth within 14-7 with 4:21 left in the opening quarter.
Shiner then went ahead 21-7 with 9:15 left in the first half on a 13-play, 85-yard drive that took nearly seven minutes off the clock; Cowan converted a 3rd-and-4 play from the Pirate 43 with a 25-yard run. Williams then lurched forward on quarterback sneak before heading to the outside for an 18-yard touchdown run.
Poth got inside the Shiner 30 on the next drive but Fric recovered a fumble around his own 35. Cowan carried twice for 14 yards on the first two plays; Jones had a 13-yard run. Williams ran for 10 yards to convert a third down. Jones's 7-yard gain on a 3rd-and-6 moved the ball to the Pirate 8 where Williams scored on an 8-yard scramble for a 28-7 Shiner lead.
On the first play of the next drive, Luna was intercepted by Williams to set up Shiner at the Poth 24. The Comanches got down to the 4 but could not finish the drive before the half ended.
The Pirates managed to put together a drive to start the second half, going from their 20 to the Shiner 12 in five plays.
Luna hit Koy Mocyzgembra for 4 yards to the 8 where Mocyzgembra fumbled the ball which somehow made its way into the end zone where offensive lineman Ben Grant recovered it for a Poth score with the point after no good, leaving Shiner ahead 28-13.
Poth forced a turnover when they picked off Chase Malinovsky's pass after Williams had to leave the game for one play after having his helmet come off on the previous play.
Poth drove all the down to the Shiner 7 from their 4, aided by a Shiner horsecollar-tackle flay. However, a Luna pass fell incomplete on fourth down from the 8.
Shiner gained 34 yards on seven plays before Williams ripped on a 58-yard run to complete his hat trick of rushing touchdowns for a 34-13 Shiner lead with 8:28 left to play.
Shiner stopped Poth again on fourth down at their own 32 and then the Comanches iced the game with a 23-yard run by Triston Vesely.
Poth capped scoring on the next drive as Luna found Payton Helford for a 28-yard,running-back screen pass on third down to the Shiner 15 and did the exact same play again to score on the next snap of the ball.
Shiner is on the road for the next two weeks as they play at Industrial this week and wrap up non district with a game at Luling on Sept. 26.
