The Rice Consolidated defense came out with a different look than what the Comanches were expecting and it caused Shiner some early grief.

The grief did not last for too long as Shiner adjusted and rallied after the Blue Raiders went up 7-0 early to defeat the visitors 34-15 Friday night ( September 5, 2025 ) at Comanche Stadium for the first home game and improving to 2-0.

"Rice came out in a different defense to start the game. We had to settle down, and figure out what they were doing defensively and make a few adjustments. I thought the players handled it well even thought we got off to a slow start," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said.

The Raiders got less than 200 yards of offense with 166 of those through the air but were able to score a couple of times.

"Defensively, we had to defend a short field a couple of times and they were able to take advantage and score. But once we were able to settle in on both sides of the ball and get accustomed to their speed, we did some good things."Shiner pressured Rice quarterback Kor'Dae Johnson and sacked him a few times, recovered two fumbles and got an interception.

"We knew being able to pressure him would be key because he is definitely a dual-threat quarterback; we had to get multiple people to him. Our guys executed. We gave up some plays but no big plays," Boedeker said.

Shiner rushed for 350 yards on offense and gaining 420 total.

Jarvis Williams ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, finding running back Quincy Jones for another 40-yard plus touchdown pass to end the first half. Jones scored on the ground while Triston Vesely led Shiner with 110 yards rushing and scored on an 85-yard run.

While not hampered as much by turnovers as was in last year's game, Shiner did lose two fumbles.

"We talked after the game about turnovers. We don't want to turn the ball over at any point in the game but especially when trying to run down the clock late," Boedeker said.

Shiner got a total of 2 yards on its first six offensive plays which made up two three-and-outs. Rice had a good punt return after Shiner's second offensive series to the Comanche 16 and Johnson hit AJ Jenkins on a 16-yard pass for a 7-0 lead with 3:42 left in the opening quarter.

Shiner answered with a five-play, 75-yard drive: Jones had a 32-yard run from his 30 to the Raider 38 and later, Shiner had a 3rd-and-2 at the Raider 32 and Williams went around the left side for a 32-yard touchdown. The point after was no good, leaving Rice ahead 7-6.

Rice punted on its next series but got a 64-yard punt to the Shiner 24. Shiner was unable to make much headway as a unsporting penalty and quarterback sack killed the drive.

However, it turned out good as Rice muffed the punt and Shiner recovered at the Raider 27.

Jones scored on a toss play and Clayton Fric had a two-point run to give Shiner a 14-7 lead with 9:38 left in the second.

The Raiders took nearly six minutes to drive to the Shiner 20 before Williams got an interception to end the drive. Shiner later faced 3rd-and-9 from its 15 when Vesely took the inside handoff on the option and raced 85 yards for a touchdown to give Shiner a 21-7 lead with 1:50 left in the half.

Rice had another hiccup on special teams as a 9-yard punt set up Shiner at the plus 42. Shiner struggled to move the ball but repeated a heroic play from the first game against Hallettsville as Williams found Jones for a 44-yard bomb as time expired and Shiner went to the locker room ahead 27-7.

Shiner appeared to ice the game as Williams scored on a 2-yard sneak with 4:49 left in the third quarter to cap a nine-play, 62-yard drive after Rice punted after taking the third-quarter kickoff.

However, Rice was not just done yet as Glenn Mills scored on a 2-yard run and had a two-point run with 6:17 left to play to finish a 13-play, 92-yard drive in which Johnson went 8-of-8 for 84 yards.

Shiner lost a fumble on its next drive after having also lost a fumble later in the third quarter. But Rice lost a fumble of its own to allow Shiner to run out the clock.
