After coming very close to a state title last year, the Shiner Comanches have the talent, depth and motivation for a possible return to Arlington.

And shortly after their trip to AT&T Stadium, Shiner got right back to work.
"Gauging by our offseason workouts and the turnout we had for summer workouts as well as the attitude and effort at the start of practice for this season, I would say they are very hungry to return," Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
"They have been easy to coach because they know what it takes (to make state), you can't take shortcuts or skip any steps. They bought into the process. We have to take one week at a time and prepare ourselves to get better every day. The players have done that throughout the offseason and the summer and it has carried over to pre-season practice."
The Comanches will have 13 seniors on the roster for this season.
"We have another good group that has done well in leadership. They are natural leaders; some of them are not vocal but lead by example; you have to have both kinds of leadership styles and we have that," he said.
Shiner does have several spots they need to fill after graduating five players. The Comanches have three spots on their offensive line that were vacated by class of 2025 members Kye Adamek, Jared Werner and Barrett Shelton.
"We lost three really good linemen. We have some guys that we have trained to come in and fill those roles. We liked what we saw during the first week of practices," Boedeker said.
The Comanches will have a new starter at quarterback in Jake Simper after the graduation of two-year starter Carson Schuette.
"Jake got a lot of practice reps and he did get some game reps," Boedeker said. "He is very capable of running our offense.
Shiner also lost running back-linebacker Caleb Lehnert but is stocked with returning players for both spots.
"We have a lot of skilled players back; five running backs return from last year and we gained a couple we feel can contribute," Boedeker said. "We have a lot of guys to get the ball to that can do good things."
Simper will be primarily be backed up by Jarvis Williams, who will also see action at receiver and defensive back.

Boedeker said Quincy Jones will likely see a lot of carries.
"Quincy was our leading rusher last season. Triston Vesely, Caleb Cowan, Clayton Fric, Tyler Harvey, Landyn Pohler and Jace Caddell will also carry the football," Boedeker said. "It will be a matter of getting every one of them rest so they can go four quarters and since they will also be playing defense, they will all be in rotation," he said. Also listed at running back is Ismael Zamora.
At tight end, Shiner is well stocked as Bode Werner returns from injury and is joined by Charlie Clifford, Landen Christensen, Kaden Neskora and Carson Brown.
At receiver, Williams and Boe Boehm both return and will be complemented by Chase Malinovsky, Cameran Evans, Cauy Herman, Lane Simper, Hunter Hernandez, Stephon Bradley, and Aaron Migl.
On the offensive line, Jacob Nerada will play center, Cason Dement is back at left guard and Gavyn Lopez returns at left tackle; Elijah Mesa, Drake Cerny and Luke Dierlam have all worked at right guard; at right tackle, Kaleb Matula, Sulyvan Lopez and Dierlam have all been taking reps.
"We are rotating in Brycen Rosales as well," Boedeker said.
Further depth for the line includes Canaan Bishop, Grant Baros, Marquise Upshaw, Clay Spann and Joseph Moore.
On the defensive line, Bode Werner and Clifford are both back at end; Dierlam, Cerny, Izmel Zamora and Sulyvan Lopez are working at the tackle spots to fill holes.
Fric, Brody Popp and Baros are working in at middle linebacker; Vesely played linebacker last year; Bishop, NASCAR and Caddell are also part of the group.
For the defensive secondary, Williams, Harvey, Jake Simper, Jones and Boehm all got playing time last year; Lane Simper will also help out.
Boedeker said Christensen is the forerunner to handle punting duties.
"Special-teams situation now is fluid," he said. "We are trying out a lot of guys and seeing who will be on the field a lot, and who could get on special teams. Bode and Kaden will be doing the kicking."
In non district against Hallettsville, Rice Consolidated, Poth, Industrial and Luling, majority of the 2024 players are back.
"Rice Consolidated graduated a big senior class but they are always good," Boedeker said. "It will be a challenge for us and we want a challenge to discover weaknesses and get them corrected before district."
The Comanches are in the second year of the two-year rotation in 15-2ADII against Falls City, Charlotte, Pettus, Louise and Yorktown.
"We have to stay healthy through the non-district schedule. Before you start district, you need to be consistent in all three phases. You want to start playing your best football.
