"We have to start faster," Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "We also did not finish real well at the end and got tired. We cannot just feel our way around at the start; we have to be in attack mode right away. I thought we played really well in the middle part of the scrimmage."
The Comanches outscored Ganado 2-0 during the controlled scrimmage and the Indians outscored Shiner 2-1 in the 20-minute running clock live quarter for a final score in favor of Shiner 3-2.
"We played physical and had some big plays on offense," Boedeker said. "We flew around really well on defense against a good Ganado offense. They definitely gave us a good test."
Because of their youth, Shiner will need to spend a little time working on their basics of their system.
"We need to work on and get better at our base stuff," he said. "We have some guys playing in positions that are new to them on varsity. We have to improve our technique, alignment and pad levels on the lines. We are going to be smaller size wise than most everyone we will play so we have to utilize our quickness and pad level.
"We also need to continue to improve at tackling."
The Comanches' controlled-scrimmage scores came on a 70-yard run by Clayton Fric with the Shiner first offense and then a 77-yard run with the second offense.
In the live quarter, Caleb Cowan scored on a 70-yard run.
Ganado got two scores, one on a 37-yard touchdown pass and then an 18-yard pass.
The combined Shiner offense was 20 rushes for 273 yards, averaging 13.65 yards a carry which was helped by three touchdown runs of 70 yards or more.
Shiner completed just 2-for-7 passing for 18 yards.
Shiner had 27 total plays for 293 yards and had six first downs. Shiner lost one fumble and had one penalty for 10 yards.
Ganado was more successful throwing, going 18-of-25 for 183 yards and two touchdowns.
The Indians ran the football just 28 times for 95 yards for 3.92 average.
Ganado had 53 plays for 278 yards. The Indians had two penalties for 20 yards.
