JOURDANTON - In most, if not all, of their games this year so far, the Shiner Comanches have matched up against opponents with larger players.

And in every game, Shiner did not back down.
The Comanches battled Brackett in the 2ADII area round at Indian Stadium in Jourdanton on Friday night ( November 22, 2024) . With the Tigers being the bigger team. Shiner held their ground and got a big push on both sides of the football in a 54-7 win to advance to the regional semifinal round.
"Both lines did well. We came off the line really well just like how Coach (John) Peterson told us. We dominated Brackett," senior offensive-defensive lineman Barrett Shelton said. "They have more size than us but the defensive line stayed low and let our linebackers and secondary do the rest."
Not only did the Tigers have size but they used that size to play physical against their opponents.
"The win was big as Brackett is good, looked good on film, had a big physical running back. We tackled really well on defense and that was going to be a big key to the game," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "Proud of how we set the tone offensively. Our lineman came off the football and we were able to score some points tonight. Our kids stepped up to the challenge; Brackett was size-wise bigger than us, lines and running backs. On film, we saw how their running back Kontagious Cook just ran through people and we did a good job of containing him."
On the offensive side, Shiner had 414 yards on the ground, averaging 9.4 yards a carry. Quincy Jones led with 125 yards and one touchdown while Carson Schuette ran for 105 yards on just five carries and two scores. Caleb Lehnert played a key supporting role with 72 yards and two touchdowns. Triston Vesley and Caleb Cowan had one touchdown each on the ground while Schuette was 2-of-4 through the air with 49 yards and one touchdown.

Shiner's dominance on the line was clearly seen on defense as the Tigers were held to just 87 rushing yards on 33 carries and had just 94 total yards of offense altogether. The Comanches intercepted three passes, recovered one fumble and forced six punts.
Shiner got started immediately, going 65 yards in six plays after taking the opening kickoff. Jones and Lehnert each had a 24-yard run with Schuette capping the drive with a 2-yard sneak for a 6-0 lead at 9:15 after a missed point after.
The Tigers lost 6 yards on three plays on their first series and punted for 52 to the Shiner 22. The Comanches appeared to stall out when they faced 3rd-and-8 at their 36 before Schuette hit running back Clayton Fric for 29 yards to the Tiger 35. The drive later ended when Schuette scrambled for 9 yards on a 4th-and-13 from the Tiger 38. Shiner got the ball right back as linesman Jared Werner got an interception of Troy Sandoval to setup Shiner at the Tiger 20. Jones had a 16-yard run to the 4 and Lehnert scored on the next play; Jones had a two-point run for a 14-0 Shiner lead at the 2:38 mark of the first quarter.
With 1:27 left in the first, Jake Simper grabbed the Comanches second pick and a 14-yard run by Lehnert capped a seven-play, 31-yard march for a 21-0 Shiner lead with 10:24 left in the half.
The Tigers threw an incomplete pass and lost 12 yards on two rushing plays, one of which was an 11-yard sack on Sandoval by Kye Adamek.
The Comanches started at their 48 after the punt and needed just one play to score - Vesley's 52-yard run after taking an option pitch from Schuette at the 8:58 mark.
Shiner scored two more touchdowns - Landen Christensen's 20-yard pass from Schuette to complete a six-play, 53-yard drive; the Tigers managed to get into Comanche territory on the next drive but a Jones interception ended the momentum with 1:18 left in the half and Shiner started at its 11. Schuette took the snap and for a millisecond, looked like he was searching for an open receiver and then just took off, following some blocks for an 89-yard run at the 1:02 mark for a 41-0 Shiner lead.
Shiner got two scores in the second half - a 4-yard plunge by Jones with 8:47 left in the third quarter and an 11-yard run by Cowan with 11:01 left in the game as the second-string offense went 55 yards on six plays.
The Tigers ended the shutout as Sandoval scored on a 54-yard read-option keeper as Tigers went 70 yards in two plays to get within 54-7 with less than eight minutes to play.
Shiner is scheduled to play Granger at 7 p.m. Friday at Barry Field in Smithville in the regional semifinal round.
