Shiner and Falls City each had at least three trips inside the opponent's 30 yard-line.
It was the Comanches who did better capitalizing as they beat the Beavers 21-3 on Friday ( October 18, 2024) in their first varsity action since a 56-7 win over Luling Sept. 27.
Shiner's offense could have had a few more points on the board but did lose two fumbles, including one on the opening drive inside the Beaver 10 and had one interception.
"We had some mistakes (three turnovers) and did not play perfect. We played good enough against a really good team," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "This game is definitely going to make us better. We faced a team that has a quarterback with great speed like that and big defensive linemen you have to block. Those things make you better."
The Shiner defense stepped up and held Falls City to just one field goal; the Beavers missed another one and had a fourth-down attempt deep in Comanche territory fail.
"Our guys played really great on defense against a good Falls City offense," Boedeker said. "We challenged them to play fast and tackle well. We got some big stops when we needed to."
The Comanche pass rush, led by senior defensive lineman Kye Adamek, started becoming effective late in the third quarter and in the fourth quarter when the Beavers had to start throwing more to try to get some points.
"I feel our quickness on defense helped out a lot," Adamek said. "At first, they told me to spy on Braylon (Johnson) but later I was able to help blitz him."
The second half started with the Beavers, down just 7-3, taking the kickoff but mishandled it and started at their own 6. A short 1-yard gain on the ground followed two plays later by a pass play for a 4-yard loss forced a Beaver punt to around their 25 and Shiner returned to the 22. On the second play, Quincy Jones had a 15-yard run to the 5 and scored on the next play for a 13-3 lead after Falls City blocked the point after.
Falls City was stopped on a 4th-and-3 from their 37 as Johnson lost 12 yards but the Beavers got the ball back with an interception on third down after holding Shiner to just 2 yards rushing on the first two plays.
The Beavers moved the ball on the ground with Johnson, Brady Lake, Breiten Ramsey and Kain Jurgajtis on various option plays but they were hampered with a couple of penalties and ended the drive when Adamek brought Johnson down for a 10-yard loss to the Beaver 32. More chaos was on the menu for Falls City when punter Dale Shaffer had the snap go over his head. He had to desperately loft a long pass that went incomplete (and could have gotten the Beavers a first down if completed).
The Comanches scored in two plays - Caleb Lehnert got 7 on a toss play and then repeated to score on a 25-yard run. Carson Schuette hit Adamek in the corner of the end zone to put Shiner ahead 21-3 with 10:38 left in the game.
The Beavers went to the air to go from their 43 to inside the Shiner 10 but some negative plays pushed them back to the 16 and rather than gamble and try to make a first down, they elected to have Jurgajtis try a 32-yard field goal attempt. His attempt went off to the right. Shiner punted on the following drive and the Beavers went back to throwing the ball on almost every play to get down to the Shiner 14 but a sack of 8 yards by Charlie Clifford on Johnson on 4th-and-9 with less than two minutes in the game sealed the win for Shiner.
The opening drive for Shiner started promising: the Comanches ran the football from their 38 to the Beaver 9 in six plays, highlighted by a 29-yard run from the Beaver 46 to the 17 by Jones. The Comanches' Clayton Fric had a 4-yard run from the 9 to the 5 but Falls City forced and recovered a fumble.
With their misdirection option game, the Beavers drove 78 yards to the Shiner 17 but had to settle for a Jurgajtis 34-yard field goal for their only points of the game.
Shiner gained the lead, which they would not lose, later after a Beaver punt to the 50 and 15-yard return by Jake Simper to the 35. Jones capped a five-play drive with a 6-yard run with 9:19 left in the first half with Jacob Nerada, filing in for Bode Werner at place kicker, nailed the point after.
Notes: Both teams had around 218-219 offensive yards but Falls City ran 73 plays while the Comanches had 41 and had the ball longer with 29 minutes, 2 seconds to Shiner's 17:04.
