A safety and then two more stops out of the next three opponent possessions reinvigorated the Comanche defense.
Following the first half against Industrial on Friday ( September 20, 2024 ), where neither defense was able to get a stop and the Comanches were ahead 20-14, Shiner got a defensive safety and then scored following the free kick and overran the Cobras 49-28 at Comanche Stadium for Shiner's first win of the season.
"The safety set the tone for the second half. We knew it would be important to come out and get a stop. To get a safety on top of the stop, you could see the excitement in the kids and once that happened they were determined to finish the game," Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
"The defense played incredible. We can still get better with some things to improve. Our line played great; the linebackers filled the gaps and the secondary did what they needed to play one heck of a game," linebacker-running back Caleb Lehnert said.
Shiner (1-3) had only scored about four touchdowns in its first three games but produced a masterpiece with over 400 offensive yards, including 59 rushes for 374 yards.
Quarterback Carson Schuette paved the way rushing for 137 yards and two touchdowns while going 2-for-2 passing for 65 yards and one score. Triston Vesley ran for two scores with Lehnert and Qunicy Jones adding one score each.
"The offensive line held their blocks very well and our running backs were staying on their blocks better. Runners were getting downhill quickly," Schuette said.
"We made some big plays on offense and had a lot of guys contribute. Some of our younger players got to play. It started up front with the offensive line. Carson did well directing the offense and several backs did good getting into the end zone," Boedeker said.
Industrial was led by Cooper Martin (103 rushing yards, two touchdowns) and Nic Kulher who ran for a touchdown and threw for one.
Shiner scored every time they had the ball and neither team had a single punt.
Industrial dropped the second-half kickoff and had to start at their own 7-yard line. After two plays for a net gain of 2 yards, Lehnert sacked Kuhler in the end zone to give Shiner a 22-14 lead at the 10:40 mark of the third quarter. Shiner returned the free kick to its 49, ran twice with Jones for 11 yards before Cowan took an option pitch for 11 yards to the 29, followed by 17-yard run by Tyler Harvey. Schuette picked up 7 yards on a sneak and Jones capped the drive with a 5-yard run to put Shiner ahead 29-14 with 8:01 left in the third.
The Cobras had better luck with the next kickoff and drove over 30 yards to inside the Shiner 35 before Kuhler was held to a 3-yard rush on a 4th-and-4 from the 36.
On the first play of the Shiner drive from their 33, Schuette scrambled for 27 to the Cobra 40; the Comanches later faced a 4-and-1 at the 31. Vesley took the ball on the fullback dive, ran into a couple of Industrial defenders but was able to break free and race to the end zone for a 36-14 Shiner advantage with 3:06 remaining in the quarter.
Industrial then closed the gap to 36-21 after a seven-play, 65-yard drive that ended on a 10-yard run by Martin.
Shiner replied with a five-play, 56-yard drive in nearly two-and-half minutes, scoring on a 40-yard Schuette scramble with 10:32 left in the game to go ahead 42-21.
The Cobras overcame a 15-yard penalty on the kickoff with Martin racing 30 yards from his 20 to the 50. The drive ended on downs as Kuhler completed a -1-yard pass to Aidan Janis on 4th-and-9 from the Shiner 49.
Shiner then got a safety score with a 13-play, 50-yard drive in over six minutes. Fourth-down runs by Cowan and Lehnert kept the drive going and Lehnert later scored on a 9-yard run with 3:09 left in the game for a 49-21 lead.
Industrial refused to go away and drove 63 yards, ending on a 37-yard strike by Kuhler to Ga'Zaih Lopez. Industrial then failed to recover an onsides kick twice, having the first one called back on a penalty and then illegally touching the second one which gave Shiner the ball at the Cobras 43 where the Comanches ran out the clock.
Shiner opened the game with a 14-play, 73-yard drive that ate up six-and-half minutes; Schuette had a 7-yard scramble on a 3rd-and-6 play and later an 8-yard gain on a 3rd-and-7. He finished the drive with a 10-yard run for a 7-0 lead at the 5:17 mark of the first quarter.
Kuhler took the Cobras 59 yards in five plays, scoring on a 40-yard keeper.
Schuette attempted and completed his first pass, a 30-yarder to Kye Adamek, to get Shiner from its 25 to the Cobra 45. Several players later, Schuette hit Boehm for a 35-yard touchdown pass to put Shiner back on top 14-7 with 19 seconds left in the first period.
A 17-yard run by Martin at 10:05 to go in the first half, knotted the score at 14-14.
Vesley's 2-yard run with 4:05 until halftime put Shiner up 20-14 after a missed PAT.
Industrial got all the way to the Shiner 20 but Kuhler threw an incomplete pass as the first-half clock ran out.
