The Shiner Comanches hosted Karnes City in its first scrimmage, the annual Towel Scrimmage, on Friday evening ( August 16, 2019 ) at Comanche Stadium.

First-year head coach Daniel Boedeker liked a lot of what he saw. “Overall we are pleased and still have things to work on,” he said.

The Comanches throughly dominated the Badgers, scoring six offensive touchdowns: five on the ground and one through the air. Shiner scored early on a 53-yard pass, and had touchdown runs of 45, 2, 3,62 and 2 yards.

The Comanches went 2-for-5 passing for 63 yards and tallied 28 carries for 415 yards, gaining a total of 478 yards on 33 plays. Shiner had four flags for about 35 yards and made 15 first downs.

Shiner tested out some new things on offense that had been created in the laboratory of the practice field.

“Offensively, we worked on some different packages that we had worked on in practices and wanted to see what they would like like against a different opponent,” Boedeker said. “I thought we did a good job overall as our linemen got to their like we were expecting them to, and our backs and quarterbacks did good things with the football.”

Shiner’s defense kept Karnes City in check, stopping them from getting into the end zone on all but the final Badger possession.

The Comanches intercepted one pass and several quarterback sacks and other tackles for losses.

The Badgers were able to break out a couple of productive plays but never got in rhythm.

“Defensively, our effort was there. There are some things we can clean up; we need to tackle a little better,” Boedeker said. “We got a little tired coming off our first offensive series and we are going to work some more on conditioning. I really liked our quickness on defense and how we were going to the football quickly; just have to work on finishing plays on first contact as Karnes City on a few plays got some extra yards after contact.”

Shiner will scrimmage at Luling today ( Thursday, August 22, 2019) with the junior varsity starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6:30.

The Comanches open the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at Hallettsville.
