The Comanches opened the 2018 playoffs with a 76-0 win over Santa Maria Cougars Thursday night ( November 15, 2018 ) at Pirate Stadium.
Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said the playoff experience of the younger players was invaluable.
“Our younger kids are going to get tougher and tougher,” he said. “We had Santa Maria outmatched; we were tougher; we were more athletic.” The backsup and JV players played with the same intensity as the starters.
“They all stood out. They all got out there and got after it,” Cerny said. “The JV and varsity backups showed they have been getting good work.”
Shiner took the opening kickoff to its 49 and scored on the first play from scrimmage, a run by Doug Brooks.
The Cougars went three and out on their first drive and the punt return set up Shiner at the Santa Maria 23. The Cougars defense was able to recover a fumble on the first play but was held to two yards on the drive and had to punt, setting up the Comanches at the Cougar 47.
Donyai Taylor ran three straight times to total 28 yards, overcoming a holding call on Shiner. Tyler Mikes hit Hunter Kloesel for 10 yards to the 19, Taylor then had an 18-yard rush to the 1 and Mikes scored on the next play.

Shiner took a 34-0 lead when Cole Patek ran in a blocked punt four a touchdown. Early in the second frame,
Collin Bujnoch recovered a Cougar fumble and Patek scored two plays later on a 31- yard pass from Mikes.
