Plenty at stake in regular-season finales for local football teams
It’s the final regular season games for the Shiner teams this week.
The Shiner St. Paul Cardinals are at St. Gerard tonight (Thursday, November 8, 2018 ) while the Shiner Comanches host Wallis Brazos tomorrow, ( Friday, November 9, 2018 ).
Playoffs seedings are on the line for both teams
BRAZOS COUGARS AT SHINER COMANCHES
Shiner hosts the Cougars in the regular season and district finales.
“Brazos has lots of good skilled players,” Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said. “Offensively, they are multiple. They will go I-formation, under center, spread. They love the big play and will run gadget plays as well.”
Jaylin Vela is the Cougars’ best receiver and will get the ball in every conceivable way— passes, reverses, even lining up in the backfield.
Quarterback Luke Demny is solid at his position and running back Jaeden Ward is a pretty big guy.
Shiner will need to prevent Cougars from making big plays.
“Defensive line will have to get a pass rush going and pressure the quarterback. Linebackers and secondary will have to play coverages well,” Cerny said. Brazos runs a 3-4 on defense and will bring pressure from the outside linebackers.
“Their defense is not all that big but they are quick and attack aggressively,” Cerny said. “We will need another great performance from our offensive line.”
A win by Shiner gives them the outright district title and if the Cougars win, it will put Shiner, Brazos and Weimar all in a threeway tie for first place. Shiner beat Weimar 48-6 and the Wildcats won 28-8 against the Cougars. Brazos is 5-3 and 2-1.
“A lot is at stake in this game,” Cerny said. The Comanches had their open date last week ( Friday, November 1, 2018 ) and made quick work of Kenedy on October 26th, winning 83-0.
“It’s time to play. The kids are getting tired of practicing and are ready for a game,” Cerny said.
