Rotating players in and out equals fresh players equals more energy.

This was the formula Shiner used as they blasted the Burton Panthers 63-31 Thursday night at Comanche Stadium for Homecoming 2018.

The game had been scheduled for Friday but moved up because of the weather forecasts that called for huge amounts of rain in the area.

The Panthers strolled into town, bringing a very potent offense that did put up yards and points but in the end could not get enough past Shiner to get the result.

“They have weapons. We knew their offense is very good,” Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said. “The main thing is we were able to stay fresh, especially on special teams. We had some different guys out on the field and got to rest some of our starters. That was the biggest difference; we had a lot more energy, offense and defense, especially in the second and fourth quarters.”

The Comanches offense had just a few penalties and just one turnover, a massive improvement from the second game at Industrial.

“Execution was the point of emphasis this week. We told them we had to practice a lot faster this week (because of the game being rescheduled from Friday to Thursday) and they answered the challenge,” Cerny said.

The improved execution led to Shiner excelling at what they do best: Run the football.

The Comanches ran past the Panthers by totaling 575 rushing yards on 52 carries led by Doug Brooks who ran for 179 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown while quarterback Devin Lehnert added 159 yards on 10 carries and three scores.

Burton came out of the gates fast on the first play from scrimmage as quarterback Caleb Harmel went deep over the middle to Tristan Brantley for 49 yards from the Panther 30 to the Shiner 21. Three plays later, De’monderick Winters ran in from the 8 and with the point after no good, Burton led 6-0.

Shiner answered immediately with two-play 69 yard drive. Shiner lost a couple on the first play and Doug Brooks took a handoff, went up the middle, looked to be surrounded and then got out of trouble and was off to the races for a 71-yard touchdown run for a 7-6 Comanche lead.

Burton got back to Shiner’s side on the next drive but failed a fourthdown conversion but their defense got the ball right back with an interception. Harmel’s 15-yard run capped a five-play, 33-yard drive for a 12-7 lead.

Shiner came back with a 77-yard drive in four quick plays. On a first down from the Comanche 35, Lehnert simply followed his center on a sneak up the middle, got free and went to the house.

Shiner made it 21-12 at the 8:29 mark as a 4-yard run by Taylor finished a seven-play, 68-yard march, helped by a 50-yard gain by Brooks.

The Comanches forced a three-and-out and scored for a 28-12 lead on a 2-yard sneak by Lehnert. Taylor got a 37- yard gain to help out.

He had Shiner’s next touchdown as the Panthers were deep in Shiner territory and Brantley fumbled after taking a pass for a 5-yard loss to the 33 and Taylor took it for six.

Winters later got Burton within 35-18 after Shiner muffed a punt.

The Comanches opened the second half with an 87-yard drive that concluded on a 34-yard run by Taylor his second rushing and third overall touchdown of the evening, giving Shiner a 41-18 lead after the point after was missed. On the next possession, Winters caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Harmel to bring the score to 41-24.

Shiner then had their longest scoring drive of the game, going 73 yards in 11 plays and over six minutes. Collin Bujnoch capped the drive with an 11-yard run. On the point after, Lehnert had to deal with a bad snap and lofted a pass for Lane Nevlud for two points.

Shiner was not done yet —early in the fourth quarter, Lehnert ran for his third score, a 66-yard run and Trevor Haynes scored on a 1-yard run on a drive that was set up with Hunter Kloesel’s interception.

The Panthers still had a little left as Harmel scored on a 65-yard run with 3:38 left in the game.
