The Comanches hosted Division 3A-D-I rival Hallettsville, who was in a similar predicament, at Comanche Stadium.
The Brahmas used its speed on offense to gain over 500 yards of offense in a 49-12 win.
The Comanches fought hard against a faster opponent.
“I knew we were not going to be in great shape going into this game because we did not have the true nondistrict preseason schedule. But our guys hung in there. We had a lot of them going two ways,” Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said.
The Comanches will benefit later in the year for having facing a team like Hallettsville.
“If you are going to have a chance to challenge for a district title, you are going to have go against a speedy team,” he said. “This was good for us because we have to learn how to take better angles on defense and things like that. We had some new players in the secondary,”
The Brahmas went three-and-out on the first series and Shiner took advantage with a 59-yard drive: Tyler Mikes ran for 13 yards on third down and Jacob Cowan took a toss play for 10 yards and another first down, to the Brahma 14. Collin Bujnoch capped the drive with a 4-yard run and the point after was no good but Shiner led 6-0 with over seven minutes left in the opening quarter.
Hallettsville answered with a six-play, 54-yard drive. DJ Taylor found Jordan Brooks for 8 yards on fourth down and one to go. A few plays later, DJ Taylor went to Jackson Taylor for a 36-yard touchdown pass. The point-after kick missed, leaving a 6-6 game.
The Brahmas scored after forcing Shiner to punt. DJ Taylor went to Jackson Taylor for 25 yards on second-and-20 play. Running back Scooter Adams scored on 14-yard option play and the Brahmas led 12- 6.
In the second quarter, Hallettsville stopped Shiner on fourth down just past the 50 and Adams scored on a 35-yard run to cap a quick threeplay, 53-yard drive for a 18-6 lead as a two-point run failed.
Hallettsville scored once more in the frame as DJ Taylor hit Adams across the middle for a 74- yard pass that finished a quick two-play 81-yard drive and the Brahmas led 25-6 at the break.
The Comanches opened the third quarter with a nearly four-minute drive that Donyai Taylor capped with a 30- yard run to get Shiner within 25-12.
Hallettsville got touchdown passes of 19 and 69 yards from DJ Taylor to Jackson Taylor and Lane Linhart, respectively, for a 37-12 lead to head into the fourth quarter. The Brahmas then scored twice on the ground with a 32-run from Logan Holik and 41-yard jaunt by Tirrell North.
