LA GRANGE — Held in check just a tad at the plate in Friday’s regional- quarterfinal matchup
against Milano and their talented pitcher Jenna Lewis, the Lady Comanches made sure their
defense was stout.
Shiner held the Lady Eagles to just five hits and without a run in the 3-0 win at La Grange
Softball Field.
“We did a great job of pitching,” Lady Comanches head coach Steven Cerny said. “And we had
great defensive plays. Big plays. There was a couple of them that could have been the
difference in the game had we not made them.”
Shiner did well in fielding line drives and fly balls, and turned a sixth-inning double
play.
“The double play was big; Kassidy’s catch of a fly ball in the fifth was big because if it
gets by her, it’s probably a 3-3 game. Kailey had a line drive, Lauren (Schuette) had a
back-hand play in that one inning. We needed great defense because Jenna Lewis is a great
pitcher. She did not have 240 strikeouts in the season for no reason.
The Lady Comanches scattered five hits, with a a solo home run by Kailey Williams and a
double each from Lauren Haas and Madison Jalufka.
“We came through when we needed to and manufactured some runs that got us through it. Couple
of big hits,” Cerny said.
Both sides went in order in the first inning. In the top of the second Williams got a
leadoff walk and got to second on the sacrifice groundout by Schuette. Williams got Shiner a
1-0 lead as she scored on the Haas double.

The Lady Eagles nearly tied the game in the third inning as Emilie Compton singled and went
to second when Naomi Graham was walked. Compton stole third as Shiner had an error on steal
attempt and she tried to advance to home but a throw by third baseman Haas to catcher
Jalufka prevented the run and was the third out, getting Shiner out of the inning.
The Lady Comanches doubled their lead in the fourth inning as Williams homered over the
left-field wall with one out.
Milano threatened in the fifth inning with a pair of two-out hits, with runners at first or
second. A shot into right field was secured by Bishop, not allowing the Lady Eagles any
runs.
Shiner added one more run in the sixth inning as Bishop singled and later scored on the
error. With one out in the bottom of the inning and a runner on first, Williams fielded a
ball threw to Schuette for an out and Schuette went to first baseman Claire Patek for the
double play.
