After being dominated the previous week by Refugio, the Shiner Comanches needed a good performance to lift their spirits.

The Comanches bounced back and bounced back hard with a 41-12 win over Three Rivers Thursday night ( November 10, 2016 ) in the Class 2A Division 1 bi-district round, the first-ever home playoff game for the Comanches.

"It felt good to get back out here after last week's game and we played real well," Shiner head coach Steven Cerny said. "I was somewhat worried because we were banged up and a little down after Refugio. They answered by working well on Monday and Tuesday."

Shiner's defense was ready for what the Bulldogs were going to run.

"We knew they would come with smash mouth football," Cerny said. "We knew we had to get down low and play good technique, especially with their misdirection."

The 'Dogs had the football for over half the first quarter — after picking up a couple of first downs on the first drive, Shiner got an interception but ended up losing a fumble on the same play. Three Rivers drove a little past the 50 but a fourth-down pass by Austin Black fell incomplete and Shiner had the ball with 3:54 left in the quarter.

"Three Rivers drove the ball early (first quarter), we made some adjustments on defense and besides one big play (a 70-yard touchdown run), I thought our defense did excellent," Cerny said.

The Comanches then drove 56 yards, getting runs of 11 and 26 from Dadrian Taylor. Quarterback Brandon Cerny capped the drive with a 19-yard run on an option keeper. The point after went wide and Shiner led 6-0.

Shiner had a short field to work with after Taylor returned a punt 36 yards to the 'Dog 29 after the visitors went three and out. Charles Haynes picked up a couple of yards to the 27 and Taylor scored on the next player. He also converted the two-point play.

Three Rivers got on the board with a 71- yard drive, capped by a 70-yard reverse by Joey Alvardo to come within 14-6. The Comanches answered with an eightplay, 59-yard scoring drive that Taylor scored on a 30-yard run after some key blocks from teammates. The 'Dogs managed to use a couple of more minutes on their next drive but no points and Taylor had another great special-teams play as he returned the punt 71 yards for 28-6 Comanche lead.

Shiner extended its lead to 35-6 after the first drive of the second half. Taylor had a 21-yard run on the second play and followed up with an 18-yard reception from Brandon Cerny. Later, Shiner had third-and-6 at the Three Rivers 22 where they borrowed a page from the 'Dogs' playbook as receiver Ty Boedeker scored on a reverse.

After some punts and the 'Dogs defense nabbing an interception, the Comanches used the remaining 1:47 of the third quarter and a few minutes of the fourth frame to score again as Brandon Cerny faced third-and-15 at the Three Rivers 36 after some penalties. He put a ball into the path of Caleb Oden who then outraced his defender to the end zone for a 41-6 lead.

The 'Dogs only got to their 9 on the following kickoff but drove the distance in about 17 plays and used over eight minutes of the remaining time to punch the ball in via a 5-yard run by Michael Retzloff for the last score of the game.

As a result of their win, the
Comanches advanced to the Area round to meet the Mason Punchers on Friday night ( November 18, 2016 at 7:30pm ) at Kuempel Stadium in Pflugervile.
