SHINER VS. LULING (scrimmage)

The Shiner football team did not have the best start in its final tuneup Thursday evening against Luling at Comanche Stadium.

Shiner did bounce back and finished strong as they scored two touchdowns and held Luling to a single score.

"I did not like the way we started. I felt we came out lackadaisical ,and did not have a lot of intensity and emotion," Comanches head coach Steven Cerny said. "First time to play in front of the home crowd, I was hoping we would come out with some more emotion."

"Our slow start carried over until we got to our second-string defense and then we got a little life."

The Comanches got the ball into the end zone twice during the controlled scrimmages, a touchdown pass from Brandon Cerny to tight end Jordan Malinovsky and another on a short touchdown run.

Shiner stepped up intensity during the live quarter portion of the scrimmage.

"We picked it up during the live quarter and played better," Steven Cerny said. "We did have a fumble and made some other mistakes but there were also a lot of positive things."

He wants to see Shiner start out and maintain a high level of intensity in games.

"We have to be aggressive on both offense and defense," Steven Cerny said. "If we do not get more physical and aggressive, it is going to be a long year. To add to that, we have to get into better shape."

The improvement in intensity was the biggest plus Steven Cerny observed in the scrimmage.

"In the live scrimmage, we did not do a few things smart and theoaches had to get on a couple of players but we came back with positive attitude and ended on a good note."

Shiner starts the regular season at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, August 26, 2016) at Comanche Stadium against the Goliad Tigers, who are under the guidance of first year head coach Bobby Nicholson.

"We have been practicing for a long time now. It is time for games. I just hope we can handle the first week of school. That is another distraction when you start off but it is time to play some football," Cerny said.
