After cruising through the first three rounds of the playoffs, the Comanche baseball season came to an end at the hands of the Refugio Bobcats, 1-0, in Cuero Thursday night [ May 28, 2015 ].

Both teams played incredible error-free defensive games, but the Bobcats out-hit the Comanches by two with seven hits over the course of the game.

Refugio’s lone run snuck in during the top of the third when Shiner catcher Brandon Cerny threw down to second baseman Tyler Patek to pick off the runner at first stealing second. They got the out, but could not get the ball back home in time to stop the runner at third from heading home.

In such a competitive defensive game, this single run proved enough to send Refugio on to the Region IV-2A final.

Shiner seemed closest to a comeback win in the bottom of the sixth when they strung together two hits from Brice Bernhausen and Ty Boedeker.

Senior Blake Michalec came to the plate with two runners on and just one out and hit a long ball down the left field line that seemed to send the tying and winning runs home. However, after a flurry of excitement, the hit was called foul and the runners returned to their bases.

Although they fought valiantly through the rest of the game, they were unable to recapture the momentum lost on that controversial play.

Ty Condel pitched a complete game for the Comanches, striking out 6, giving up 7 hits and walking just one batter.

Shiner’s other three hits came from Bernhausen in the third, Michalec in the fourth, and Murrile in the seventh. They finished the season with a 23-4-1 ledger.
