The Shiner Comanches 2014 Football season came to an abrupt end Friday night at Dragon Stadium in Round Rock. The Mason Punchers took a 7-0 halftime lead and after a lengthy lightning delay, scored 37 points in the second half to defeat Shiner 44-20.

The first half of play was exactly what was expected as the Top 10 ranked teams squared off for the 5th consecutive year in the playoffs. After trading possessions and punts throughout the first half, Mason finally took advantage of a short Shiner punt and started their first scoring drive at the Shiner 41 yard line. On the fourth play of the drive, the Mason coaching staff called a time out with just over a minute left before halftime. On the next play, quarterback Miguel Castillo hit running back Seth Hudson in stride for a 33 yard touchdown strike. The extra point was good and Mason finally struck first with 0:57 left in the second quarter.

Up to this point in the game, neither team’s offense had much success moving the football as Mason gained just 99 yards of total offense and Shiner gaining just 66 yards of total offense at halftime.

Following a 1 hour and 17 minute lightning delay, both teams were able to get back on the field to finish this hard fought contest. Poised to set the tone after some halftime adjustments, the Shiner offense took the opening second half kickoff but was unable to get things on track. With a false start on the first play, a negative gain on the second play, the offense needed 15 yards on third down. Unable to gain the needed yardage, the offense was forced to punt again. Punting into a wind the Shiner punt only went 25 yards and was downed at the Shiner 47 yard line.

The Mason offense then used 10 consecutive rushing plays to score with Seth Hudson doing the honors from 3 yards out. The extra point was good and Mason now held a 14-0 lead with 5:51 left in the 3rd quarter.

Shiner’s next possession ended with a fumble recovered by Mason’s Garrett Bibb at the Shiner 44 yard line. Three plays later Mason’s Miguel Castillo ran the ball in from 30 yards out and after a successful extra point attempt Mason now held a 21-0 lead with 3:39 left in the 3rd quarter.

Another Shiner punt ended the third quarter of play with Mason taking possession of the ball at their own 43 yard line holding a 21-0 lead going into the fourth quarter. On the third play of the drive, Mason’s Luis Castillo raced in from 41 yards for the score. The extra point attempt was good and Mason now held a commanding 28-0 lead with 11:12 left in the 4th quarter of play.

The Shiner offense answered quickly with a 2 play 58 yard drive capped with Tyler Patek running 47 yards for the score. The extra point attempt was no good but Shiner had finally got on the board with 10:40 left in the 4th quarter trailing 28-6.

The Mason offense then took the kickoff and used 7 plays to cover 58 yards with Seth Hudson rushing the final 10 yards for the score. The extra point attempt was good and Mason led 35-6 with 7:21 left in the 4th quarter.

Not giving up, the Shiner offense answered Mason’s score with a 3 play drive, consisting of 2 pass plays and a Tyler Patek 26 yard run for the touchdown. However, on the extra point attempt, Mason’ Garrett Bibb intercepted the two point pass and returned it 102 yard for a 2 point score for Mason. This resulted in the score being Mason 37 Shiner 12 with 6:43 left in the 4th quarter.

Following a failed onside kick by Shiner, Mason’s Seth Hudson scored from 45 yards out on the first play of the drive. The extra point attempt was good and Mason finished their 4th quarter scoring barrage and now held a comfortable 44-12 lead with 6:32 remaining in the 4th quarter.

The Shiner offense managed to score one more time with Blake Michalec throwing a 10 yard touchdown pass to Justin Stovall. A Michalec to Caleb Murrille 2 point conversion pass was good and the Mason lead was now 44-20 with 1:55 left in the game.

Mason recovered the onside kick and ran out the final 1:55 and the victory.

Although the Shiner season ended with a 10-2 record and a second round lose in the playoffs, Head Coach Steven Cerny and his staff will quickly go to work striving to find the next group of players looking to carry on the long standing playoff tradition of Shiner Comanche Football. With Shiner’s proud tradition and hard work ethic, the coaching staff will be looking for numerous players willing to sacrifice and work to fulfill the expectations of Comanche Nation.
