On any typical Friday football night, most experts can predict, with a satisfactory ratio, the amounts of upsets that can occur throughout the state. With this being said, the Schulenburg Shorthorns received the opening kickoff and used 1:26 of the opening period, ran only 4 plays covering 62 yards and ran through the Comanche defense for the opening score with Caleb Valchar covering the final 11 yards.

The extra point attempt was good and the Shorthorns were on the way to creating an upset of their own with an early 7-0 lead, making some experts believe this was their night.

Fortunately, for the Comanches, they used an 8 play, 67 yard drive to counter the Shorthorn score with Chad Neubauer covering the final 17 yards for the score. The extra point attempt was no good but the Comanches cut the Shorthorn lead to 7-6.

Going into the second quarter of play, with a Shorthorn 7-6 lead, both teams traded possessions until Shorthorn kicker Alex Lara kicked a 42 yard field goal to expand the Shorthorn lead to 10-6 with 6:23 left in the second quarter.

The Comanches then took the ensuing kickoff and wasted little time answering the Shorthorn score with one of their own, covering 67 yards in little under 3 minutes with Chad Neubauer covering the final 20 yards of the drive for the score. The extra point attempt was good and the Comanches now held a 13-10 lead with 4:27 left in the half. Shorthorn kicker Alex Lara did attempt a 48 yard field goal on the final play of the half, but the kick was wide left.

Both teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime adjustments with the Comanches holding a narrow 13-10 lead.

With the intention of sending a message to the Shorthorn defense, the Comanches took the opening kickoff of the second half and used 3 plays to score with the big play being a Blake Michalec to Dadrian Taylor covering 63 yards for the score. The extra point attempt was good and the Comanches now held a 20-10 lead. This lead would hold up going into the fourth quarter of play.

The Comanches scored 2 more times in the fourth quarter with Blake Michalec scoring from 55 yards out with 4:25 left in the period and Chad Neubauer scoring from 36 yards for the Comanche’s final score. Both extra point attempts were good and the Comanches defeated the Shorthorns by a score of 34-10 securing a playoff spot for the Comanches.

The Shorthorns did play a good physical game with the Comanches, testing the strength of both the offensive and defensive lines. It does not get any easier for the Comanches as they will play their final regular season home game Friday night.

They will be playing one of their most fierce rivals in the Flatonia Bulldogs. Anyone who has witnessed these match ups can attest to the intense atmosphere created when these two teams meet.

In addition to Parent’s night, it is also the 50th anniversary of Comanche Stadium and the Shiner Athletic Booster Club is planning a special halftime event recognizing all the football players on the first football team to play on the hollowed turf of Comanche Stadium.

If possible, they would like as many players and coaches, if able to attend, to joy the celebration of this event. Please see another article in the Gazette for more information about this subject. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 at Comanche Stadium.
