FREDERICKSBURG - Wall was the bigger school in its showdown with Shiner on Friday, but the Hawks were by no means the bigger team.

Shiner's powerful offensive line -- along with the dynamic 1-2 punch of running backs Dalton and Doug Brooks -- was too much for Wall to handle as the Comanches posted an impressive 42-14 win at Battlin' Billie Stadium in Fredericksburg.

Shiner, the defending state champion in Class 2A Division I, pushed its winning streak to 20 games and improved to 6-0. Class 3A DI Wall fell to 2-2.

The Brooks brothers combined for 348 yards and five touchdowns, proving why each of them is garnering interest from NCAA Division I colleges.

Yet Shiner's linemen showed why the Comanches are about much more than just the Brooks brothers.

"They're one of the most physical ballclubs we've seen in a long time," Wall head coach Houston Guy said. "They've got two Division I running backs and an offensive line that plays nasty, and a defensive front that plays nasty, and they're going to grind it out.

"You feel like you pick your poison (with the Brooks brothers), and then the other one gets you. They're a very physical football team, and they impose their will on you."

Dalton Brooks, a 185-pound junior, broke loose on the second play of the game for a 57-yard touchdown run that gave Shiner the lead in the opening minute.

He also had TD runs of 34 and 25 yards, finishing with 15 carries for 210 yards.

His older brother, Doug, a 280-pound senior, had TD runs of 59 and 5 yards. He finished with 138 yards on 10 carries.

"There's definitely some talent there," said Wall senior defensive lineman Austin Alwine, who recovered a fumble by Dalton Brooks. "They're a big group, I'm not gonna lie. We just had to play to the best of our abilities and play bigger than we actually are, and that's what we tried to do tonight."

Wall struggled to move the ball much of the night as the Hawks were outgained 454 to 236 in total yardage.

The Hawks did manage a 72-yard TD drive to close out the first half, capped by Gabe Haskins' 2-yard run with 11 seconds left in the second quarter, to cut the deficit to 21-7 at halftime.

Wall had another first-half drive that stalled after reaching the 6-yard line, and the Hawks missed the field goal.

Wall had another drive reach the 13-yard line early in the fourth quarter that failed to produce points.

Shiner has allowed only seven TDs in six games.

"I'm very proud of our kids. Wall's a great football team and has a great football program," Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. "We have a lot of respect for those guys. Even though we don't play them all the time, we know of them. Our kids knew it was going to be a difficult challenge, and I thought they accepted the challenge and played really well."

Wall's offense was led by wide receiver Jacob Richardson -- not something said often in the Hawks' run-heavy offense. Richardson hauled in seven passes for 67 yards, and he had a 21-yard TD catch from Haskins to cap the game's scoring with 1:41 to play.

Wall's running game was largely stifled. All-West Texas running back Dominic Garcia was held to 17 yards on 10 carries. The Hawks managed 130 rushing yards on 39 carries, an average of just over three yards per attempt.

"We're still a very young football team," said Guy, whose team returned only three starters on offense and none on defense from last year. "We knew size-wise it was going to be a mismatch, and we knew speed-wise it was going to be a mismatch. When you put those two elements on the field, you're going to lose some battles."

Shiner is off next week before opening District 13-2A Division I play at Flatonia on Oct. 15.

Wall will open District 3-3A Division I play at home next week against San Angelo TLCA. A matchup with a Shiner-like team, defending state champ Jim Ned, awaits in two weeks.

"We've got to go to work," Guy said. "We have a very competitive district, and there are some teams in there that are going to be very challenging."
