ELGIN -- When you have a young team that is still learning to make their game crisp, you will take wins almost any way you can get them.
Especially in the playoffs.
Especially when you miss from the line and from the floor a lot in said playoff game.
But Shiner held on and escaped Wildcat Gym with a 38-36 win over Milano Lady Eagles Tuesday night in the bi-district round.
"We are a young team. We had opportunities to put Milano away," Lady Comanches head coach John Hoelter said. "We missed some free throws. In the playoffs, you just win and you move on."
The Lady Eagles took an early 4-0 lead as Ashleigh Dykes scored after a rebound and assisted on a bucket by Masey Turnage.
Shiner came back with 11 of the next 13 points as Laurie Morkovosky picked up two assists -- a jumper by Amanise Coleman and a triple by Ryan Michalec. Morkvosky then got a basket of her own and that was followed by buckets from Holly Haas and LaNeisha Hunt -- helping the Lady Comanches to a 15-10 lead at the end of the first.
The second frame was low-scoring as both teams bagged five points each, with Turnage leading the scoring with three points for Milano.
The Lady Eagles came sprinting out of the gates in the third box as Raighley Shaw hit a field goal, Kelly Wadlington nailed a tres and Dodd scored again to help give Milano a 22-20 lead with just a little over three minutes gone by in the quarter. Shiner ended the frame with eight straight, helped by a basket from Kristin Schacherl and free throws from Coleman and Amber Ramirez.
The Lady Comanches really had to buckle their seat belts and return their trays to the full, upright position in the fourth as Milano battled back from a double-digit deficit and clawed within 34-29 on another three-point field goal with 4:07 left.
Stacey Perez got an assist to Schacherl’s basket and then made a free throw to give Shiner a 37-32 advantage.
But Dodd scored to close down to three points with under a minute left and with 27 seconds left, Milano got possession on a jump ball and 12 seconds later, scored to close down to 37-36.
Then the Lady Eagles were whistled for a techincal foul. Hunt made one of those free throws to give Shiner a 38-36 lead with 9.3 seconds left.
A little later, Milano called timeout with less than a full second left but was given two seconds on the clock following the officials confering with the clock operator.
Shiner called timeout and afterwards, the Lady Eagles had the ball on their baseline with the two seconds left.
A quick pass and a buzzer hurler failed to extend Milano’s season.
Hoelter said the important thing is that Shiner got the win and now advances to the area round.
It does not matter how you do it; you just win and survive," he said. " We will take it and get after Snook on Friday."
Hoelter said tentatively his team will play at 6 p.m. Friday in Giddings against Snook in the area round,
