SAN ANTONIO — It wasn't the game Refugio was used to this postseason, but the Bobcats came from behind to beat Shiner 17-14 in a rematch of District 15-2A Division I rivals.

The Bobcats used a new play to take the lead with 9:27 remaining in the fourth quarter. On fourth-and-goal Anthony Delgado took a lateral toss from quarterback Jaylon Mascorro and found Robert Frazier in the end zone to give the Bobcats the lead.

In practice, Refugio coach Jason Herring instructed his junior to throw the ball away if there was no receiver open. With it being fourth down and the Bobcats season on the line, the instructions changed.

Delgado would have no need to force the action as Frazier was able to break free and come back toward Delgado for the go-ahead score.

The Bobcats (12-2) move on to play Lovelady at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11 in Georgetown in the Class 2A Division I state semifinal round. Lovelady won 14-7 against Shelbyville.

Shiner (13-1) would get the ball at its own 29 with a chance to drive down and regain the lead. Eight plays later Nate Smith was able to get the final stop of the game for the Bobcats' defense.

The Bobcats had been winning by an average of over 43 points per game in the postseason, but knew they would be in a tougher game with the team that had given them their lone district loss — 30-19 on Oct. 9.

Refugio's defense scored its other touchdown of the game. Jacobe Avery recovered a Dadrian Taylor fumble in the end zone.

Mascorro led the offensive charge for Refugio completing 15 of 28 passes for 192 yards. He also contributed 52 yards on the ground including the final 53 yards on the final drive to ice the game.

Frazier finished with 86 yards receiving.

On its opening drive the game, Shiner looked to have the Bobcats number getting an 85-yard touchdown run by Taylor.

Taylor took a handoff around the left side and outraced Refugio 85 yards to give the Comanches the lead in the opening quarter.

It would be Shiner's only bit of offense in the half. Refugio's defense limited Shiner to 11 yards the rest of the half.

The Bobcats on the other hand were able move the ball on Shiner's defense but failed to produce any points on the board.

On the fifth drive, Refugio drove 60 yards down to the 2-yard line with most of the drive coming on an 18-yard run to set up the Bobcats near the end zone. But a 3-yard loss on a run out of the Wildcat formation started Refugio's reversal. Daidrin Dukes lost 8 yards on a sweep around the left side then Mascorro was sacked at the 15. Marcos Arrendondo put Refugio on the board with a 32-yard field goal.

Taylor was the game's leading rusher gaining 124 yards on 14 carries.
