On Saturday, Shiner pitcher Ashley Shimek concluded a senior season that she’ll remember forever, as she threw a shutout against Grapeland in the Class A state-title game.
Shiner (32-4) added a fourth state championship to the ones the Comanches won in 2001, 2002 and 2008.
Shimek (24-0) allowed two hits, struck out five, walked one and hit one batter. She allowed only one runner to reach third base.
"I was here as a freshman (in 2008), but this was different," said Shimek, who was named the MVP of the title game. "The fans seemed loud, everything was so exciting, it was just awesome, I will never forget this moment."
Summer Groholski threw five scoreless innings for Grapeland (27-10) before Shiner scored on a back-to-back doubles by Kristin Schacherl and Ryah Michalec in the sixth.
