Jones gives Shiner big play ability

SHINER - Unlike many other high school teams around the state, the Shiner Comanches don't rely on a spread offense for big plays.

Evel Jones does enough to excite the crowd whenever he gets the ball in his hands.
"I got that always in my head, just break and go to the end zone," Jones said.
Jones looks to get the ball in his hands and run for six points often this season for the Comanches.
"He's one of those guys that's a threat every play, and you always have to have an eye on him because you never know when he's going to break for a touchdown," said junior Jacob Stafford.
As a junior in 2011, the speedster carried the ball 92 times for 745 yards and nine touchdowns while catching 18 passes for 316 yards and eight scores.
Although Jones is one of the more quiet Comanches, his play doesn't just speak loudly on Friday nights.
"There's not a play that we run that he doesn't go full speed," said Shiner head coach Cerny said.
When he is healthy, Jones has the ability to turn heads in the stands and keep offensive linemen on their toes.
"Whenever he gets the ball, you better be ready to lay your block fast because he's going to come right behind you before you even know it," said offensive tackle Tanner Pietsch.
Jones was a part of the Shiner teams that finished second in both the 800 and 1,600-meter relays at the state track meet in May.
Last season, the Comanches finished the season 8-6 and Cerny won his 100th game as Shiner head coach after a 42-14 regional playoff win against Winters.
The elation of the 100th win turned into the emptyness of a loss one week later when Shiner lost to eventual Class 1A, Div. I champion Mason 55-7.
Mason scored 42 points off nine Shiner turnovers.
"Their work ethic was there last year, the ability was there, we just turned the ball over too much last year," Cerny said.
Added Stafford: "I'm excited for the playoffs and to get to make another run and prove that we could content with anybody. We just had a rough game that one night."
Jones has set lofty goals for his final season in Shiner, including playing for a state title much like Mason did last season.
"We've got the potential," Jones said. "We've got a lot of athletes out there that are real good on our team.
