SHINER - After a slow start, the Shiner Comanches went on the warpath as they downed the Flatonia Bulldogs 34-8 to clinch a District 30-1A playoff spot.
Shiner (9-1, 4-1) got a big night from Chris Baer who scored four touchdowns. After a scoreless opening quarter, Baer broke the deadlock with a 1-yard run at the 10:35 mark of the second quarter.
Later in the quarter, Flatonia (6-4, 3-2) tied things up on a 3-yard run by A.J. Florus. Kurt Kainer added the two-point conversion run for the Bulldogs' only lead of the night.
Baer reclaimed the lead for Shiner with only 47 seconds left in the half on a 13-yard run but the two-point pass try went incomplete. Following the kickoff, Baer recovered a fumble on Flatonia's first snap giving the Comanches good field position. Two plays later, Garet Pustka scored on a 9-yard run to put Shiner up 20-8 at the intermission.
In the second half, Baer added two more touchdown runs to clinch the playoff berth. He scored on a 12-yard run with 8:20 to go in the third and finished off the scoring with a 2-yard run with nine minutes left in the game.
The Shiner option offense piled up 338 yards on 53 carries lead by Baer's 17 carries for 151 yards and four scores. Quentin Wright added 106 rushing yards on 13 carries while Pustka had 20 carries for 70 yards.
Flatonia managed only nine first downs on the night. A.J. Florus led the way with 11 carries for 48 yards and 3 catches for 27 yards and his team's only touchdown. Kainer added 10 carries for 42 yards. Bulldog QB R.J. Lester hit on 6 of 21 passes for 42 yards but was picked three times.
