Comanches clinch share of 31-1A title with win

SHINER - The Flatonia Bulldogs appeared to have the Shiner Comanches where they wanted them midway through the second quarter leading 9-3.

But the Comanches left little hope that the top-ranked Class 1A team would be upset as they scored the final 40 points en route to a 43-9 win in a District 31-1A encounter.

After Scott Shimek put the Comanches (9-0, 5-0) up 3-0 with a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter, the Bulldogs (7-2, 4-1) grabbed their lone lead in the first three minutes of the second quarter.

Lyndon Gutierrez ran 10 yards for the Bulldogs' lone touchdown and Jose Manzano added a 40-yard field goal for a 9-3 advantage.

But Chris Baer and company took over from that point.

Baer, who compiled 251 yards of offense, tossed a 74-yard TD pass to Nick Evans and Shimek added the point after to give the Comanches the lead for good at 10-9 with 8:23 to play in the first half.

Baer, who rushed for 187 yards on 10 carries, added scoring runs of 21 and 25 yards to end the first half with a 23-9 lead.

Kenzley Wright, who added 105 yards on 7 carries, blew the contest open with TD runs of 35 and 52 yards in the third quarter and Baer finished things off with an 86-yard scamper in the fourth.

Trey Curtis added 127 yards on 20 carries for the Comanches who amassed 469 yards rushing on 39 carries.
