Volleyball LOUISE - Winning a district game on the road against a defending state champion is never easy, but that's what the Shiner Lady Comanche volleyball team did Tuesday night.

Jessica Arledge had 10 kills and Cassie Stafford chipped in 33 assists to lead Shiner to a 3-1 win over the Louise Lady Hornets.

"It's very difficult to come into the Hornets Nest and win so we will take away a win tonight," said Shiner coach Michelle Winkenwerder about her team's district 29-1A opener.

"To win those games it just helps a lot with your confidence," said Arledge about winning on the road.

After the two teams split the first two games the match turning point came in the third game of the match.

With Louise leading 20-15 the Lady Comanche's mounted a comeback and took the pivotal third game 25-21 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

"These girls don't quit, they never had and they never will because I'm not going to let them quit," Winkenwerder said.

"We played well up until the 21st point of Game 3 until we decided to let them win the last nine points," said Louise coach Bryan Branch.

In the final game of the match the Lady Comanches and Lady Hornets played a close game in which the largest lead was Shiner by four points. With Shiner up 23-22 Winkenwerder called a timeout to help her team close out the game.

"It was tense, she just told us to breath," Arledge said.

The Lady Comanches scored two of the last three points to take the game 25-23 and the match.

Although Branch gave Shiner credit for taking advantage of Lady Hornet miscues in the match, he said his team has been up and down all season and if they play aggressive like they did in the second game Louise can be very good.

"We've played really well like we have in the second game and then there's times when we look like we can't beat a junior high team," Branch said.

Katie Brown who had 25 kills and Kaleigh Kutac's 31 assists led the Lady Hornets Thursday.

Ashley Shimek also had a strong night for Shiner as she finished with 16 kills and nine digs.

Shiner hosts Palacios in non-district action Friday while Louise looks to get a non- district win at home against Yoakum.
