SHINER -- Quarterback Quentin Wright's 23-yard fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Steven Evans gave the Shiner Comanches a 15-8 victory over the Karnes City Badgers.
Shiner (2-0) took advantage of Badgers penalties for its game-winning drive. On third down, a Wright pass fell incomplete. But Karnes City was flagged on the play for holding and roughing the quarterback to move the Comanches 25 yards downfield and keep the Shiner drive alive.
Shiner grabbed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Wright's 9-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Franklin and Eric Murphy's extra point kick with 9:03 left.
But Wright was sacked in his own end zone for a safety with 1:44 left in the first half as the Badgers (1-2) pulled within 7-2.
In the third quarter, Karnes City went ahead on Jason Flores' 17-yard touchdown reception from quarterback John Theriot. Shiner blocked the extra point try as the score remained 8-7.
Then the Comanches drove for the game-winning score. Wright threw a two-point conversion pass to Desmond Brooks after the Wright-to-Evans touchdown to make it 15-8.STATISTICS: Karnes City Shiner First Downs 7 9 Yards Rushing 31-100 35-125 Yards Passing 40 86 Passes 3-11-0 4-7-0 Punts 4-40.2 4-30.5 Fumbles-lost 2-1 2-1 Penalties-yards 6-45 7-65 SCORING DETAILS: Karnes City 0 2 6 0 -- 8 Shiner 7 0 0 8 -- 15 First Quarter S -- Bryan Franklin 9 pass from Quentin Wright (Eric Murphy kick), 9:03 Second Quarter KC -- Safety, Shiner QB sacked in end zone, 1:44 Third Quarter KC -- Jason Flores 17 pass from John Theriot (kick blocked), 9:07 Fourth Quarter S -- Steven Evans 23 pass from Wright (Desmond Brooks pass from Wright), 7:25Shiner Football Schedules | Return to Shiner Home Page
