LOUISE - Shiner needed a Drew Stafford 46-yard field goal with just seconds remaining to squeak by the Louise Hornets 20-18 in the teams' District 27-1A opener.
Shiner began the game as it ended -- with a field goal by Stafford, who hit a 28-yarder with :40 remaining in the first quarter.
The Comanches scored again in the second quarter when quarterback Stafford made a scoring toss to Curtis Shields for 17 yards.
Holding Shiner (5-1, 1-0) scoreless in the third quarter, Louise (1-5, 0-1) scored its first touchdown late in the third on a 1-yard by Desmond Pulliam.
Shiner extended its lead 17-6 early in the fourth when Coy Boedeker picked up a fumble and carried it 62 yards for the score.
But Louise wasn't going to go quietly. The Hornets scored midway through the quarter on a 5-yard run by Clint Barrera. Then, with only 1:27 remaining, Louise took an 18-17 lead when Barrera hit Trey Koudela on a 26-yard scoring pass.
Shiner started their final possession on their 33 and had little time to cover the 67 yards to pay dirt. Stafford completed a pass to Josh Greathouse for 10 yards and then on fourth down he hit Curtis Shields for a 12-yard gain to the Louise 41. Greathouse picked up two more yards but a penalty set the Comanches back to the 44-yard line. Stafford completed a pass to Shields to the 29 and with just :03 seconds left, Stafford booted the winning field goal.
