SCHULENBURG - Schulenburg quarterback Clayton Besetzny needed only one game to get a glimpse of the potential of the Schulenburg offense.

Besetzny passed for 127 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 93 yards to lead Schulenburg to a 47-14 season-opening win over Shiner on Friday night at Shorthorn Stadium.

"It's a lot different than last year when we ran out of the spread," Besetzny said. "But we've only put in about 25 percent of our offense so we're going to be a lot better. We can run and we can pass in this offense. There area lot of things we can do."

The Shorthorns overcame a 91-yard return for a touchdown by Shiner's Cody Franke on the opening kickoff and did just about whatever they needed to do against Shiner when they weren't stopping themselves.

Schulenburg racked up 420 yards and punted only three times but was penalized 16 times for 115 yards.

"It was a wonderful game," Mickey Finley said of his Schulenburg debut. "The kids really played hard. It was a big change for them but they stepped up and played pretty good. The thing about it is we'll continue to get better. The penalties were hustling-type things. They just weren't sure where to be. But I thought we really executed. I think we can do great things."

The Shorthorns displayed their explosiveness by scoring four times in the second quarter, including two touchdowns in a 47-second span.

Schulenburg took the lead for good on a 32-yard field goal by Carlos Lara with 11:54 left in the second quarter. The Shorthorns quickly padded their lead when Dylan Langhamer returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown and they scored again when Gene Tuttle popped the ball loose from Shiner quarterback Kyle Condel and Christian Reed caught it in the air and ran 9 yards for a touchdown.

"I thought our defense did a great job when we didn't put them in a bind like we did a couple of times in the kicking game," Finley said. "The thing about it is we where in our base defense all night. I don't think we called a stunt. They were very physical, which is the way we like to play."

After a 39-yard punt return by Franke, Condel scored on a 1-yard run to pull Shiner within 23-14 with 56 seconds left in the second quarter. But the Shorthorns needed only five plays to go 67 yards and scored on an 18- yard pass from Besetzny to Lara with 8 seconds remaining to take a 30-14 lead at the half.

"I thought the difference was they were a lot quicker than us," Shiner coach Steven Cerny said. "They were there before we where. It's good for us to see this speed. It shows us the angles we have to take and it will help us down the line."

The Comanches had only 54 rushing yards and had 14 plays where they made no yardage or were tackled for a loss. Shiner fumbled eight times and lost four and Schulenburg turned two of the turnovers into points.

The Shorthorns put the game away in the third quarter on a 24-yard field goal by Lara and a 14-yard touchdown run by Roderick Houston.

Besetzny, who threw a 23-yard pass to Beau Daniels for Schulenburg's first touchdown, was replaced Langhamer in the fourth quarter. Langhamer broke loose on his second carry for a 61-yard touchdown.

"This team is only going to get better and better," Finley said. "I'm excited to think about where we can go. We have so little of our offense and defense in right now. But it's unlimited what we can do."
