VICTORIA -- Charissa Osburn showed Saturday exactly why her
Shiner Lady Comanches will be contenders for the Class
1A state volleyball title this year.
With her team down 4-2 in Game 2 of the third annual
VISD Volleyball Tournament championship game, she
stepped to the service line and when the dust had settled
in the Memorial senior campus gym, the Lady
Comanches were celebrating a championship.
The Lady Comanches handcuffed the Memorial Vipers
15-3, 15-4 to capture the title as Osburn finished with 15
service points, including 13 straight in the final game.
"We played extremely well and this group of seniors has
been with me now for three years and everything we've
been working on is starting to come together," said Lady
Comanches coach Michelle Winkenwerder. "We played
some pretty good teams this weekend and I'm a firm
believer that you don't get any better unless you play the
best and that's what we did this weekend."
The Lady Comanches advanced to the final with a 15-8,
15-12 win over Edna in the semifinals earlier in the day,
while Memorial advanced with a 1-15, 15-7, 15-7 win
over Goliad on Friday night. Goliad went on to beat
Edna, 15-10, 9-15, 15-10 for third place.
The St. Joseph Lady Flyers captured fifth place with a
15-11, 15-5 win over Beeville and Cuero captured the
consolation title with a 15-8, 15-2 win over San Antonio
Sam Houston.
In other action Saturday, Calhoun defeated Refugio
15-7, 15-5, Palacios beat Wharton, 15-0, 15-3 and
Beeville downed Kenedy 15-9, 14-16, 15-10.
The only time Shiner found itself behind in the
championship contest was early in Game 2 when the
Vipers grabbed a 4-0 lead on two kills from Ashley
Pauley and a couple of Lady Comanche errors.
Using a net violation that forced a sideout, the Lady
Comanches cut the lead in half with two service points
from Lindsey Maxey (see photo at right).
The Vipers managed to break serve, but it would be the
last chance for Memorial as Osburn quickly broke the
Vipers serve with a block.
She then stepped to the service line and reeled off the
next 13 points for victory.
With three kills and eight digs to her credit in the match,
she fired in two aces in the run and got three kills from
DeAdra Wright, along with a game-winning dink from
Wright.
"They are a very excellent team," said Vipers coach
Melinda Kirst. "They are very well coached and were a
very good team for us to play. The kids are very
disappointed but that's OK because that should make
them focus on playing that much harder.
Shiner jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Game 1 behind the
service of Lindsey Michalec who was aided by a kill
from Jessica Pustka.
After building a 6-0 lead, the Vipers cut the lead in half
off the serve of Ashli Winegardner.
But that would be as close as the Vipers would get as
Heather Stratman ran off three straight points before the
Lady Comanches settled for a point-per-serve from there
to finish off the game.
Wright finished with seven kills, Stratman had three and
Maxey added 13 assists to the Shiner attack.
