Expectations are a product of success and so are state rankings.

Voters in The Associated Press' high school football poll expect Refugio, Shiner and Cuero to continue the success of last season, when they won district titles and advanced three rounds deep in the playoffs.

Refugio and Shiner are ranked No. 3 in the Class 2A and 1A preseason polls released Sunday, respectively, and Cuero is ranked No. 8 in the Class 3A poll. Schulenburg and Rice Consolidated received votes in the Class 2A poll.

"Our expectations are high, too," Shiner coach Steven Cerny said. "We've got some good people in some good positions. We're going to shoot for the ultimate goal, but in football you never know."

Refugio coach Jason Herring has not coached a game at Refugio but he won a state championship when he coached at Sonora and he understands the importance of tradition.

"This is what we expected considering the number of starters we have coming back and the great senior class we have," Herring said. "We played 13 games last season and it's Refugio itself. I would not want to be anywhere where there are not high expectations. We can use it to motivate the kids as long as they don't let it go their heads. As long as we take a business-like attitude and continue to work hard and we respect our opponents it's a plus."

Cuero went into last season as the No. 1 Class 3A team and being ranked eighth doesn't bother coach Mark Reeve.

"It's not easy to have that by your name," Reeve said of the top ranking. "It's funny but I think ever since 2004 everybody but us has lost the first week of being No. 1. We're not fretting it."

Herring has been happy with how quickly the Bobcats have adjusted to his staff and himself as they prepare for their season-opener against Van Vleck.

"We're real pleased with where we are," Herring said. "There's no question the group we're most pleased with is the offensive line. We knew we had great skill kids and we had the potential to be a great team if the offensive line came around. I felt like the offensive line would be the difference."

Shiner was hit by a rash of injuries last year and have already lost defensive end Daniel Doran to an injury for eight to 10 weeks this season.

The Comanches open the season against Schulenburg and play three of their four non-district games against Class 2A opponents.

"We're progressing about where we need to be," Cerny said. "What we're going to have to remember is we've got a tough non-district schedule and we cannot worry about our record even though it could cost us our ranking. We just have to really improve and get better."

The top-ranked teams in the preseason poll are Southlake Carroll in Class 5A, Copperas Cove in Class 4A, Liberty Hill in Class 3A, Mart in Class 2A and Alto in Class 1A.

Cuero will visit Liberty Hill on Sept. 21. The Gobblers defeated Liberty Hill 31-27 last season before the Panthers bounced back to win the Division II state championship.

"I think the rankings are more of a compliment than anything else," Reeve said. "It's good for the fans and the people in town to talk about. But nobody knows what's going to happen."
