Shiner players head for the dugout during their Class 1A semifinal victory over Windthorst on Wednesday at the UIL State Baseball Tournament at Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
AUSTIN - Patience proved to be a virtue for Shiner.

The Comanches made nearly every swing and take count and rolled to a 12-4 Class 1A state semifinal victory over Windthorst before a crowd of 2,832 on a muggy Wednesday afternoon at Disch-Falk Field.

Shiner improved to 22-10 on the season and advanced to today's championship game against McLeod, a 12-5 winner over Valley Mills in Wednesday's other semifinal.

The Comanches will play for their third state championship at 11 a.m. at Disch-Falk Field. Shiner won Class 2A state titles in 1981 and 1992.

Windthorst, which was making its fourth state tournament appearance, ended the season at 27-3.

Shiner scored four runs without a hit in the first inning and added at least one run in every inning but the sixth. The Comanches had 11 hits, but were also the beneficiary of nine walks and five hit batsmen. "They had trouble throwing strikes," said Shiner coach Steve Cerny. "But we did have some hits. We were patient. That was our game plan. When we've gotten into trouble, it's because we've been too aggressive. We made them work."

Windthorst starter Augie Berend and relievers J.D. Steinberger and Chad Schrieber labored to throw strikes and went through only one inning without walking or hitting a batter.

At least two Shiner runners got on base in every inning and the Comanches added to the Trojans' misery by stealing seven bases.

"We had a little trouble getting the ball over the plate," said Windthorst coach Leonard Schenk. "But Shiner was real patient and they made us throw strikes."

Shiner jumped to a 4-0 lead without a hit in the top of the first and after Windthorst rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning, built the lead behind a solid pitching performance by Adam Dawson. Dawson yielded eight hits and four runs, three earned, before leaving the game with tightness in his right bicep after two were out in the sixth inning.

"Adam wasn't at his best, but I thought it was a gutsy performance," Cerny said. "He hung in there and did a good job of mixing his curveball with his fastball."

The Comanches batted around in the first inning and scored three runs before recording their first out.

Berend started the game by hitting Kelsey Pohler and walking Chris Baer, Dawson, Garet Pustka. Berend also allowed a run to score on a wild pitch and another Shiner run came home on a passed ball by catcher Justin Wolf.

After going to a 3-0 count to R.J. Lester, Berend was relieved by Steinberger, who issued ball four to Lester and a sacrifice fly to Brady Strauss.

Windthorst pulled within a run in the bottom of the first inning on two-out RBI singles by Steinberger and Chad Schrieber and a throwing error by left fielder Marcus Lopez.

But the Comanches extended their advantage to 7-3 in the second on singles by Pohler and Dawson, a two-run triple by Pustka and an RBI grounder by Lester.

"You have to relax and you can't help them out by chasing bad pitches," said Pustka, who had four RBIs and scored two runs. "You just have to relax, wait for your pitch and hit the ball."

Shiner added solo runs on an RBI single by Dawson in the third inning, a run-scoring single by Jared Boedeker in the fourth and a sacrifice fly by Pustka in the fifth.

"We had too much too overcome today," Schenk said. "We tried to come back, but Shiner was too good of a team."

Dawson made sure the Trojans wouldn't come back by limiting them to one run after the first inning.

"I started off a little rough and they took advantage of some chop hits," Dawson said. "But coach Cerny paid me a visit to the mound and established the fact that I'm a senior and this is my time. He told me to do what you've got to do."

Dawson threw 104 pitches while yielding eight hits, two walks and hit one batter. He struck out four and stranded five runners.

"My fastball felt real good," Dawson said. "The past two games, I've had a little trouble with my curveball because I wasn't staying closed. But I was able to use it today and it kept them off-balance."

Shiner closed out the scoring with two runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Lopez and the third Windthorst wild pitch.

Pohler, Dawson, Strauss and Boedeker each had two hits for Shiner.

"There's no doubt getting the early lead helped," Cerny said. "Today, everything went our way."
