The Comanches enjoy a well-deserved rest after their 6-5 victory over the Thorndale Bulldogs on Wednesday night in Brenham.
BRENHAM - Shiner did many things right against Thorndale, and it did many things wrong.

But what the Comanches did best was persevere and the result was a 6-5 win over the Bulldogs in Game 1 of their best-of-three Class 1A regional final series on Wednesday night at Leroy Dreyer Field.

Shiner improved to 20-8 and will try and wrap up the series on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Weimar. The teams will return to Leroy Dryer Field, if necessary, Saturday at 4 p.m.

Shiner spotted Thorndale (25-5) leads of 2-0 and 5-2 before scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth on only one hit, a two-run single by Chris Baer.

Baer scored the decisive run on a sacrifice fly by Russell Boothe, who got Shiner on the board with a solo home run over the center-field fence in the first inning.

"We knew it would be a close game," Shiner coach Daniel Boedeker said. "We told them they would have to play hard for seven innings because they could hit the ball and the game would never be over. We knew it would come down to the last inning."

The Bulldogs scored all their runs off Shiner starter Garet Pustka with two outs. Thorndale starting pitcher Jeffrey Kiesling hit a two-run double in the first inning and Miles Grisham ripped a bases-loaded triple in the fourth.

But Pustka, who threw 137 pitches, overcame seven hits and six walks by stranding 10 runners and worked out of bases-loaded jams in the fifth and sixth innings.

Pustka did not allow a hit after Grisham's triple and recorded four of his seven strikeouts after the fourth inning.

"Garet struggled with his control early," Boedeker said. "But he started to hit his spots better later in the game. He hung in there and competed well."

Baer had three of Shiner's seven hits and scored two runs, while Boothe and Pustka each had two RBIs.

Kiesling and Chris Gerren each had two hits for the Bulldogs.
