top Class 1A all-state honors

It's been a month since Shiner won the Class 1A state football championship, but the Comanches are still basking in the glow of the school's second state title.

"It still feels just as great today as it did then," Shiner senior Chris Baer said. "It's a great memory for my senior season."
Baer will be able to add to his memories after being selected as the Offensive Player of the Year and the Co-Defensive Player of the Year on the Texas Sports Writers Association's Class 1A all-state team announced on Tuesday. Baer shared defensive honors with New Deal senior defensive back Casey Bigham.
Shiner's Steve Cerny is the TSWA Class 1A Coach of the Year.
Shiner coach Steven Cerny, who led the Comanches to a 16-0 record, was chosen as the Coach of the Year.
"It was a great season overall," said Baer, who was a first-team selection at running back and linebacker, and was a third-team pick as a kick returner. "You couldn't ask for anything more."
The 6-foot, 200-pound Baer did more than his share to lead Shiner to a state title. He rushed for 2,120 yards and 40 touchdowns, passed for 121 yards and one touchdown, and scored 252 points. Baer had 144 tackles, including 13 quarterback sacks, and intercepted two passes. He also returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown in Shiner's 33-19 victory over Stratford in the state championship game.
Shiner senior Clayton McCorkle was also a first-team selection on offense and defense. The 6-3, 240-pound McCorkle was picked as an offensive tackle and on the defensive line.
Shiner senior Kevin Berger was a first-team selection at defensive back.
Shiner and Flatonia each had two players chosen for the second team.
Shiner senior Scott Shimek was selected at kicker, and senior Dustin Pohler was picked on the defensive line. Flatonia junior Wade Berger was chosen at offensive guard, and junior Kurt Morrill was picked at defensive back.
Shiner senior Jared Boedeker was selected as Honorable Mention at linebacker.
