Senior Quentin Wright ran for three touchdowns and caught a pass for another as the Shiner Comanches downed the D'Hanis Cowboys, 48-2, in bi-district play at East Central High School Saturday.

The Comanches will now play Ben Bolt in the Area playoff round at Pleasanton this Friday.

Wright, who had seven carries for 44 yards, scored on runs of seven and four yards in the first period and added a 4-yard run and 15-yard pass reception in the second period as Shiner jumped out to a 34-2 lead in the first half.

Chris Baer, who rushed for 90 yards on 15 carries scored on a 22-yard run in the second period and a 10-yard scamper in the third quarter.

Garet Pustka eludes two tacklers and races 52 yards for the touchdown.

Garet Pustka added the final touchdown for Shiner on a 52-yard sideline run. Pustka rushed for 117 yards on 10 carries and completed 5-of-8 passes in the game.

"Our first drive for a touchdown, followed by the fumble recovery got us a good start," said Coach Steven Cerny.

"We played good on both sides of the ball. Kevin Berger did a great job at center and Jeremy Burchell's play on defense in the middle made a big difference."

Cerny said the Comanche downfield blocking has been good throughout the season but it was especially good against D'Hanis.

Wright caught three passes and Chase O'Connor and Steven Evans had one reception each. Closing out the game in the fourth quarter were Kenzley Wright 66 yards, Trey Curtis, seven yards and Derek Lopez, four yards.

Scott Shimek kicked four extra points before being sidelined with an injury in the game against D'Hanis.

Shiner rushed for 328 total yards, while holding the Cowboys to just 86. The Comanches also led the aerial attack with 85 yards to the Cowboys' 37.

The Cowboys' only points came on a safety in the first period when Pustka slipped on a passing attempt from his end zone.

Three of Shiner's scores were set up by the Comanche defense. Jared Boedeker recovered a fumble, Brady Strauss blocked a punt and Casey Coleman intercepted a pass.

Wright's 7-yard touchdown run capped a 62-yard opening drive by the Comanches. Scott Shimek split the uprights for the PAT and Shiner led 7-0 with 8:01 left in the first period.

Boedeker recovered a fumble on the Cowboys' 25-yard line on their third play from scrimmage, setting up a 5-play drive with Wright scoring from the 4-yard line. Shimek's kick made it 14-0 with 4:58 left in the first period.

Chris Baer leaves one tackler behind on his 22-yard touchdown run against the Cowboys.

D'Hanis was forced to punt and on the return, the Comanches were penalized back to their 3-yard line. Two plays later Pustka slipped in the end zone for a safety, giving D'Hanis their only points of the game.

Shiner scored again early in the second quarter on a 56-yard drive with Wright starting the march with a 4-yard gain.

Pustka then carried three times to the 30 and Baer took it into the end zone on three consecutive carries. Shimek's kick upped the lead to 21-2.

Strauss' blocked punt set up Shiner's next score on the D'Hanis 29-yard line. A 25-yard pass to Chase O'Connor set up Wright's 4-yard scoring run. Shimek's PAT was good and Shiner led 28-1.

Coleman's interception on the D'Hanis 40-yard line set up Shiner's final score before intermission. Shiner drove to the 10-yard line but a holding penalty pushed the Comanches back to the 18.

It took four plays before Pustka hit Wright in the end zone with a 15-yard scoring strike. Kloesel, kicking for Shimek who was injured earlier in the quarter, missed the PAT but Shiner had a commanding 34-2 lead at intermission.

D'Hanis again had to punt on their first possession of the second half. One minute later, Shiner capped a 3-play, 44-yard drive with a 10-yard run by Baer. This time Kloesel's kick was good.

Shiner's final score came with 5:11 left in the third period when Pustka got past the line of scrimmage and raced 52 yards along the sideline with good blocking along the way. Kloesel made the final 48-2.

The Comanche defensive unit continued to do their job shutting down the Cowboys' offense. Coach Cerny put his second offensive unit in for most of the fourth quarter.

Meliton Borrego led the Cowboys with 68 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback Arnold Gomez was 3-for-13 with one interception in the passing department.

Scott Shimek will be lost for the season with a knee injury. Coach Cerny said he had a cracked bone in the knee and will have to undergo surgery. Clayton McCorkle will take his place at the defensive end position and Ryan Kloesel and Steven Evans will share the kicking duties.

Game time against Ben Bolt is 7:30 p.m.

"Ben Bolt is a very physical team. They have a 9-1 record and have a good defense, but we don't think they have faced anyone with our quickness."

The winner of this game will probably face West Sabine.
