SABINAL -- A stellar effort on defense and an explosive offense gave Shiner a 49-3 win over Sabinal Friday in the District 30-1A finale. The win gives the Comanches a playoff spot and sets up the bi-district game against Medina this Friday in Wimberley.

After scoring one touchdown in the first period, the Comanches broke the game open in the second period, scoring three times to take a 25-3 lead.

Shiner would add 12 points in both the third and fourth periods for a 49-3 final score. Eric Murphy was the big gun for Shiner, scoring on runs of 40, 23 and 56 yards and kicking a 25-yard field goal. Murphy also added two extra point conversion runs for a total of 25 points for the night.

"Eric ran real well. We had good blocking, especially from Ryan Spann, Jeremy Parr, Shawn Flores and Derek Krause," said Coach Billy Turek.

The Comanches had 407 yards total offense, while the Yellowjackets were held to 78 yards. The Comanche defense forced seven punts, giving the Shiner offense opportunities to score.

Coach Turek cited his defensive line, especially Jeremy Burchell and Robbie Pavelka at the tackle positions and Shawn Flores, who dominated the defensive effort. "He probably played his best game of the year," noted Turek.

Bryan Franklin opened the scoring on a 55-yard run with 1:53 left in the first period. Murphy added the 2-point conversion.

Shiner exploded on their first possession of the second period with a 10-yard run by Garet Pustka, an 11-yard gainer by Franklin and a 10-yard touchdown run by Pustka. Murphy ran in the conversion and Shiner led 14-0.

Murphy scored his third touchdown of the night just hefore the third quarter ended on a 56-yard run and Shiner led 37-3.

With the Comanche defense again forcing a punt, Shiner took advantage of another opportunity. This time, Pustka connected with Devin Carroll with a 51-yard scoring strike.

Josh Smith joined the scoring parade with a 3-yard run late in the game to make the final 49-3.

Shiner amassed 336 yards rushing and 71 yards passing. Murphy carried nine times for 149 yards, while Franklin finished with 111 on 10 carries. Pustka had 29 yards rushing and completed 2-of-4 passes to Carroll and Franklin.

As to Friday's bi-district game, Coach Turek said Medina is a physical team. "They run well and play smart football. We will have to avoid mistakes. If we can avoid fumbles, we have a good chance to win," he added.

Shiner (6-3) will meet Medina (7-3) at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at Wimberley.
