SHINER --
The Shiner Comanches failed to nail down the District 30-1A title,
losing to the Falls City Beavers, 23-18, last Friday at Comanche Stadium.
In addition, the Comanches suffered a big blow to their defense
when Adam Dawson was lost for the season with a leg injury.

Dawson broke the fibula (small bone) in his left leg in third quarter
action, sidelining him for the season.
"It's a clean break of the small bone about two inches above the
ankle," said Adam. "I'm doing fine and the prognosis is for a good recovery.
I'll be on the sideline with plenty of moral support for the guys," he said.
The Comanches will have to regroup this week for their final game
against Sabinal. They need a win to clinch a playoff spot. The district
placing will also depend on the outcome of the D'Hanis-Falls City game.
Weston Zunker, who rushed for 236 yards on 32 carries, led the Beavers
with two touchdowns. Zunker scored on a 1-yard run early in the
second period and on a 52-yard run late in the third period.
Falls City scored their winning touchdown with a 32-yard pass from
Brian Sixto to Joey Wiatrek with 10:43 left in the game.

Neither team could muster any offense early in the game. The first
quarter included six punts, three by each team, before Bryan Franklin lit
up the scoreboard on a 35-yard touchdown run with :58 left on the
clock. The 2-point conversion was no good but Shiner had broken the
scoreless deadlock.
Zunker set up his first touchdown with four carries on the Beavers' next
possession, including a 38-yard run to the Comanche 24 where Kelsey
Pohler made a touchdown saving tackle.
Three plays later Zunker drove in for the score from the 1-yard line
The 2-point conversion pass from Sixto to Derek Sturm was good and
Falls City was ahead, 8-6.
Franklin and Chris Baer both had good runs on Shiner's next possession
but the Comanches were again forced to punt. The Shiner defense held and
Falls City had to punt back.
The Comanches drove from their 28 to the Beaver 42 before giving up
possession on downs with 3:10 left in the half.
Three plays later, Zunker found a hole in the Comanche line and raced
52-yards to up the lead to 14-6.

The Comanches had one last chance to score with four seconds left in the first half
when Josh Smith intercepted a pass on the Beaver 2-yard line. The
Comanches set up for a field goal attempt by Dawson who took the snap
instead and threw a pass to the end zone which was broken up as the half
ended.
Shiner finally scored with 2:21 left in the third period on a 14-yard
run by Franklin. The PAT conversion was no good but Shiner had cut the
lead to l4-12.
Shiner took an 18-14 lead with :15 left in the period on a 35-yard run by
Chris Baer.
Falls City replied with a 78-yard scoring drive climaxed with a 33-yard
touchdown pass from Sixto to Joey Wiatrek. The PAT was good and the Beavers
led 21-18.
Following the kickoff, the Beavers recovered a Shiner fumble on the Comanche
27. The Beavers made a first down but good tackles by Ryan Spann and Jeremy
Parr and a sack by Shawn Flores and an intentional grounding penalty gave
Shiner the ball on their 5-yard line with 7:49 left in the game.
The Comanches couldn't get out of the hole and on 4-and-11, Shiner elected
to give up a safety.
The Shiner offensive unit had one more chance with 3:13 left in the
game but could manage only six yards on four plays. Falls City took
over on the Comanche 26 and ran out the clock with the final score 23-18.
"It was a tough loss for us," said Coach Billy Turek. "Falls City played a
good game, but we gave up too many big plays." The Comanches ran 42 offensive
plays behind some good blocking by the line but couldn't make the first downs when
needed. Shiner had to punt six times. Falls City punted eight times.
Defensively, Shawn Flores, Ryan Spann, Adron Price, Adam Dawson and Kelsey
Pohler made some good plays.
Chris Baer led the Comanches with 106 yard on 10 carries, while Franklin added
92 yards on 15 carries.
Game time this Friday in Sabinal is 7:30 p.m.
