While the offense was adding points to the board, the Comanche defense was putting a stop to the Yellowjacket effort, allowing only six first downs.
The win ups Shiner’s record to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in district, while the Yellowjackets absorbed their 18th consecutive loss as they fell to 0-8, 0-3 on the year.
Baer, who scored on runs of 18, 6, 24 and 36 yards, was the leading ground gainer with 92 yards on five carries.
Baer’s first touchdown came on Shiner’s first possession after Quentin Wright picked off a Jaime Garza pass on the first play of the game on the Shiner 38-yard line. He capped the 62-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown run.
A 6-yard touchdown run by Baer with 2:43 left in the first period put Shiner in firm control. R.J. Lester’s conversions were good and the Comanches led 14-0.
Shiner put the game out of reach in the second period, scoring 26 points for a 40-0 lead at halftime.
Steven Evans started the fireworks in the second quarter on a pitch out from Garet Pustka. After getting past the line of scrimmage, it was a 56-yard foot race to the end zone. Shiner led 20-0.
The Comanches would score three more times before the half. Baer broke loose for a 24-yard score and a 33-yard pass from Pustka to Wright added another six.
Toby Longoria tries to bring down Eric Murphy (5) with a body block tackle in Friday's Shiner-Runge game.
Eric Murphy rambled 17 yards for Shiner’s fourth score of the period. Lester added two PATS for a 40-0 halftime score.
A 31-yard run back by Casey Coleman on the second half kick-off set up the Comanches on Runge’s 36-yard line. Baer got the call and raced to the end zone for his fourth touchdown of the night.
The Shiner defense again held and following Runge’s punt the Comanches took over at their 24-yard line. Kensley Wright then sprinted 76 yards for Shiner’s final score with 6:35 left in the third quarter. Lester’s kick made the final score 54-0.
The Shiner offense rushed for 342 yards. In addition to Baer’s 92 yards, Kensley Wright carried three times for 89 yards and Evans had 67 yards on two carries.
Garet Pustka leaves two Yellowjackets on the ground and tries to elude two more as he follows Todd Wenske (28) out of the traffic jam for yardage.
Pustka connected with Quentin Wright three times for 60 yards. Lester completed one pass to Eric Grosenbacher for 31 yards.
Not able to move the ball on the ground (111 yards rushing), the Yellowjackets went to the air. But a combination of pressure on the quarterback and good pass defense gave Garza only five completions in 17 attempts for 25 yards.
Garza and Michael Ramirez combined for 28 carries for total yardage of 111 for the Yellowjackets.
Shiner will host Falls City (7-1, 3-0) this Friday in a battle for first place in the district. Falls City was a 40-20 winner over Charlotte last week.
