Two big defensive plays in the first quarter resulted in two scores to start the Comanches off to a District 30-1 A win over Louise Friday.

Shiner would add three more touchdowns as the Comanches took a 36-0 win over the Hornets.

Scoring honors were shared by five players as the Comanches mixed up the offensive attack to pick up 251 yards on the ground and 78 through the air.

Steven Evans was the leading rusher with 98 yards on 10 carries. Chris Baer carried 12 times for 75 yards and Garet Pustka added 16 yards on four carries.

Pustka was 4-for-7 with two completions to Casey Coleman and one each to Quentin Wright and Scott Shimek.

Carl Morrison led the Hornets with 72 yards on 20 carries and two receptions for 16 yards.

Wright set up Shiner's first score with a pass interception on the Louise 45 early in the game. Baer carried to the Hornet 29. Casey Coleman then scored on a 29-yard pass from Pustka. Baer ran in the 2-point conversion.

Shiner's next score came after a 50-yard punt by Steven Evans to the Louise 3-yard line. On second down, Josh Burchell recovered a Hornet fumble in the end zone for six points. R.J. Lester kicked the PAT and Shiner led 15-0 with 3:14 left in the first quarter.

The Comanches scored twice in the second period to up their lead to 29-0 at the half. Pustka capped a 70-yard drive with a 4-yard run for the first touchdown. Baer added an 11-yard touchdown after Shiner got good field position on the Louise 35 following a bobbled punt attempt. Lester added both PATs.

Louise struck back with a 65-yard run by Trey Sulak to the Comanche 8-yard line. But the big play was nullified by an infraction, sending the Hornets back to their 17.

Louise was forced to punt but got the ball back on a fumble recovery. The Comanche defense again held off the Hornet offensive effort on the Shiner 32 as time ran out in the first half.

The Comanches scored on the third play of the second half with Evans rambling in from 35 yards out. Lester's kick was good for a 36-0 lead.

The Hornets were successful on two drives into Comanche territory in the third period but failed on fourth down attempts.

Dustin Kocian intercepted a Lester pass as the third period ended and set up Louise on Shiner's 48. The Hornets again marched to the Shiner 14 before turning the ball over on downs.

Louise had one more chance to score after recovering a Shiner fumble on the Hornet 45. A pass to the end zone seemed to be good for a score but the ball was dropped by the receiver. Wright then picked off his second interception after which the Comanches ran out the clock.

The win kept the Comanches in a tie with Falls City, a 42-14 winner over Runge, in the District 30-1A race, each with a 2-0 record.

Even with the big win, the Comanches committed seven miscues -- two interceptions and losing 2-of-5 fumbles. Shiner was also flagged seven times for 50 yards.

Shiner will host winless Runge this Friday at 7:30 pm.
