The Shiner Comanches used an aggressive offensive ground attack to stay ahead of the scrappy Nixon-Smiley Mustangs for a 34-26 non-district win last Friday in Nixon.

Shiner upped their record to 4-1, while the Mustangs dropped to 1-4.

Both teams used their running game as they amassed a combined total of 559 yards on the ground. Shiner attempted only five passes, while Nixon-Smiley threw six times.

The Wildcats took advantage of a sluggish Comanche defense and scored on a 1-yard run by Cody Emanis for a quick seven points.

Chris Baer rushed for 143 of Shiner's 332 yards, while Mikey Gaitan was the leading rusher for Nixon-Smiley with 170.

Baer scored on the first play of the game and added his second touchdown late in the first quarter.

Quentin Wright scored twice in the second period and Todd Wenske added Shiner's last score late in the third period.

Gaitan ran for three touchdowns for the Mustangs.

The Comanches surprised the Mustangs with an onside kick to open the game. Steven Evans recovered the ball at the Nixon-Smiley 40. Baer then put Shiner on the score board with a 40-yard scamper into the end zone.

The Mustangs answered with a 2-play, 47-yard drive for a touchdown. Quarterback Adam Yanes hit John Longoria with a 19-yard toss for the score. Gaitan kicked the PAT and the Mustangs took a 7-6 lead.

The Comanches lost their first of four fumbles on their next possession at the Mustang 40- yard line. Gaitan was the workhorse on the 60-yard march, capping the drive with a 1-yard run. The PAT was good and the Mustangs enjoyed a 14-6 lead with 4:30 left in the first period.

R.J. Lester's 35-yard run highlighted Shiner next possession to set up the Comanches' next score. Baer bulled his way into the end zone from 1-yard out and the score stood at 14-12 as the first period came to an end.

Shiner took the lead for good with 16 unanswered points in the second period.

After Nixon-Smiley was forced to punt, Shiner marched 89 yards on 11 plays to up their lead to 20-14. Quentin Wright scored on a 6-yard run and ran in the 2-point conversion. Steven Evans carried six times for 54 yards in the drive.

Eric Grosenbacher recovered a Mustang fumble on the Shiner 38 to stop the next Mustang drive and set up the Comanches for another score.

Lester went to the air on the drive with three completions to Wright, including a 9-yard TD strike.

Evans ran in the conversion to up Shiner's lead to 28-14 as the first half ended.

The Mustangs recovered a Comanche fumble at the Shiner 25 on the first play of the second half. Five plays later Gaitan scored on a 4-yard run to close the gap to 28-20.

The Comanches drove to the Mustang 22 only to lose the ball on a fumble on the 7-yard line.

The Mustangs advanced to their 32-yard line but two penalties sent them back to the 20. Evans then broke through the defense to sack quarterback Yanes for a 11-yard loss and a fumble.

Todd Wenske scooped up the loose pigskin and scampered into the end zone for the touchdown. The PAT failed but Shiner had cushioned their lead to 34-20 going into the final period.

The Mustangs scored quickly after taking the kick off with Gaitan again crossing the goal line from 13 yards out to close the gap to 34-26.

Nixon-Smiley recovered another Shiner fumble and tried to come back but failed on a 4th-and-5 at the Shiner 34.

The Comanches then maintained possession for 12 plays to run the clock out.

Garet Pustka, who was injured in the first game of the season and missed the last three games got in a little playing time in the final drive. He carried five times for 20 yards.

Lester finished with 64 yards on nine carries, while Evans had 58 yards on nine carries.

Wright was on the receiving end of Lester's three completions for 43 yards.

Yanes was 4-of-6 for 68 yards for the Mustangs.

This week, the Comanches open district play when they host Charlotte in a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday at Comanche Stadium.
