Shiner fumbled six times, losing three, and had one pass intercepted.

The Comanches were hoping for their third straight win of the season but the mistakes cut their efforts short as they drop to 2-1.

Carlton Waddy led the Bulldogs, rushing for 126 yards on 19 carries. Waddy scored on a 11-yard pass reception and runs of 34 yards and seven yards.

Chris Baer, Shiner leading rusher with 117 yards, scored on a 45-yard run. Todd Wenske scored on a 39-yard pass play from quarterback R.J. Lester, who himself added a touchdown on a 1-yard run. Lester also made 2-of-3 PATs.

Shiner failed on their opening offensive effort, turning the ball over on downs on the Boling 31.

The Bulldogs then went eight plays, scoring on a Shawn Jimenez to Waddy 11-yard pass with 2:06 left in the first period. Jared Waddy added the PAT.

The Bulldogs recovered a Shiner fumble on the first play following the kick off and drove to the Shiner eight before turning the ball over on downs on the 18.

A clipping penalty and a good tackle by Quentin Wright kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone. Shiner took over but was forced to punt. Evans booted the ball to the Boling 42.

The Comanche defense stiffened and Josh Burchell blocked the fourth down punt and Shiner recovered on the 42.

Lester gained three yards and then connected on a 39-yard aerial to Todd Wenske for Shiner’s first touchdown. The PAT tied the game at 7-7.

The Comanche defense again held and following a short punt, Shiner took over on the Boling 47. Two plays later, Sam Jackson intercepted a Lester pass and returned it for a touchdown. The PAT was missed but Boling was ahead 13-7 with 1:12 left in the half.

Shiner tried to get the ball into the end zone but only reached the 13-yard line as time ran out.

Shiner bobbled away another opportunity early in the third quarter when they lost the ball on a fumble on the Boling 43-yard line.

The Bulldogs marched 57 yards to the end zone with Waddy scoring on a 34-yard run. The 2-point conversion attempt failed but Boling had expanded their lead to 19-7 with 4:31 left in the third period.

Baer answered with a 45-yard run a minute later to close the gap to 19-13.

Boling added a touchdown early in the final period on a 7-yard run by Waddy. This time the try for two was good and the Bulldogs led 27-13.

Shiner got a break later in the quarter when the Bulldogs were flagged twice and another bad snap on fourth down gave the Commanches the ball on the Boling 14. Three plays later, Lester bulled over from the 1-yard line. His kick made it a 27-20 game.

With just 3:16 left in the game, Shiner dug in on defense but an offside penalty against the Comanches kept Boling’s drive alive.

Boling retained possession as the clock ticked away. The Bulldogs lucked out on a fourth down play when the punter, who mishandled the snap, threw the ball up for grabs and a Bulldog snagged it to run out the clock.

Shiner had only 29 rushing plays in the game, while Boling had 53. Lester was 4-for-9 for 79 yards and one interception. Jimenez was 4-for-5 for 68 yards.

In addition to the 117 yards by Baer, Lester had 20 yards on eight carries and Evans had 13 yards on four carries. Evans also caught two passes for 26 yards, while Todd Wenske had one catch for a touchdown.

Shiner will host Weimar this Friday at Comanche Stadium. This will also be Shiner’s homecoming and the crowning of the queen will be featured during halftime ceremonies.
