The Shiner Comanches had to overcome three lost fumbles and the passing attack of Jeff Jurica in a 41-27 win over the Schulenburg Shorthorns Friday at Comanche Stadium.

Jurica passed for four touchdowns, connecting with his favorite target Jason Dees for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Dontae Turner and Grant Gallo caught passes for the other two scores. Turner, Schulenburg's speedy running back, was held to just 79 yards rushing

Shiner's Garet Pustka completed one pass, a 59-yard touchdown toss to Casey Coleman. Pustka, however, challenged the Schulenburg defense on the ground, rushing for 169 yards and two touchdowns. In addition he intercepted a pass late in the game to stop Schulenburg's final drive.

Chris Baer rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown and Quentin Wright had 71. Kenzley Wright carried twice, including a 4-yard touchdown run.

Casey Coleman had two receptions for touchdowns -- the 59-yarder from Pustka and a 49-yard scoring pass from Baer.

The Shiner defense held Schulenburg to just 88 yards on the ground.

Schulenburg took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter after the Shorthorns recovered a Comanche fumble on Shiner's 40-yard line. On the third play quarterback Jeff Jurica connected with Jason Dees on the first of six passes to the Shorthorn wide receiver for a 24-yard touchdown. Jared Trojacek added the PAT kick.

Shiner scored with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Pustka to Casey Coleman with 1:45 left in the quarter. Scott Shimek's kick knotted the score at 7-7.

A strong rush by the Comanche defense and a good tackle by Coleman forced a Schulenburg punt to the Shiner 46.

The Comanches used six plays to reach the end zone with Pustka slipping through a hole on the line and racing untouched for the score. The PAT made it 14-7.

The Shorthorns capitalized on another Comanche fumble, recovering on the Shiner 25. Dees again beat the secondary on the first play, hauling in a Jurica pass for his second touchdown of the game. Trojacek's kick tied it at 14-all with 7:27 left in the half.

Shiner took the lead for good with 2:36 left in the half on a 49-yard halfback pass from Baer to Coleman for the score. Shimek's kick was true for a 21-14 lead.

The Comanches had a chance to extend their lead just before the half ended when Clayton McCorkle recovered a fumble in Shorthorn territory. Shiner's third fumble stopped the scoring opportunity on the 20-yard line as time expired.

Schulenburg failed to convert on their opening possession of the second half and had to punt. Shiner put together a 6-play, 64-yard drive to go up 28-14 with Baer scoring on a 12-yard run with 7:21 left in the third period.

The drive included a 20-yard run by Pustka who was stripped of the ball on the 20, but Baer, who was running alongside, picked up the ball on the bounce and carried to the 12. Shimek kicked his fourth PAT and Shiner extended the lead to 14.

Shiner recovered a blocked punt on the Schulenburg 25 and five plays later Pustka scored his second touchdown on a 2-yard run. The PAT was good for a 35-14 score with 3:31 left in the third period.

The quarter ended with the Shorthorns driving to the Comanche 15. A pass to Dees in the end zone was nullified by a penalty, but Jurica then hit Grant Gallo for a 20-yard touchdown. The kick closed the gap to 35-21.

Schulenburg tried an onside kick, but Kevin Berger covered the ball on the 48. It took just five plays for Shiner to score. After a couple of carries by Pustka, Kenzley Wright carried to the 4-yard line on a 41-yard sweep. Wright then scored from the four. Shimek's kick was blocked, but Shiner enjoyed a 41-21 cushion with 9:35 left in the game.

Schulenburg fought back with Jurica going to the air on a 71-yard scoring drive. He completed two passes to Dees and one to Turner. After two incompletions, Jurica hit Turner for a 12-yard touchdown. The try for two failed and the Shorthorns were still down by 14 with 7 minutes left.

The Comanches took almost three minutes off the clock before Schulenburg again got the ball.

Pustka clinched the win with an interception and the Comanches ran out the clock.

This Friday, the Comanche will play away vs. the Class 2A Boling Bulldogs. Boling is located just south of Wharton ... game time is 7:30 p.m.
